Breaking news about Linux!

Post by xenopeek »

There is so much happening today, I'd thought to summarize it here. Exciting developments, though a bit scary at the same time. Have I missed anything?
  • Linus Torvalds to join Microsoft to head Windows 9 project! (link)
  • Mandriva invest in Formula One racing and will be embedding the Mandriva operating system in racing cars! (link)
  • Ubuntu 13.04 will disable Dash online search by default says Mark Shuttleworth. (link)
  • Systemd will replace libc, as they need it to include an email client? (link)
  • Valve announced Half-Life 4 exclusively for Linux! (link)
Now I'm heading over to try the new Google Nose beta, letting you smell what you search for: https://www.google.com/intl/en/landing/nose/

ROTFLMAO

This one is my personal favourite:
  • Linus Torvalds to join Microsoft to head Windows 9 project! (link)
closely followed by this one:
  • Ubuntu 13.04 will disable Dash online search by default says Mark Shuttleworth. (link)
As a matter of fact, all revolutionary announcements and exciting surprises for the IT world ... though some fishy smell seems to be sneaking up here ... it is coming out of my Google browser toolbar ...

I can't help feeling that it's a bit too easy. You see something that is obviously off and then you laugh a bit, drop your guard and whammo!, you get hit by something like... http://www.debian.org/News/weekly/current/issue/#gr

IS it really Half Life 4? I thought it was Left 2 Dead 4
P.S. Tenured university professors fail to see the humor when you replace all their chalk with pastel sidewalk chalk. The students seem to think it is quite funny.

Someone posted one of these on hackernews and someone made a pull request with rm -rf ~ that got merged. Also, it's piping a remote script directly into your shell. Very dangerous.

That would be quite a booger, wouldn't it. Not unfixable, but a real pain.

Well, that isn't in this one and from the history on GitHub it never was. What you wrote wouldn't work unless you ran as root, but you have a point. I've edited the link to point to a specific commit on GitHub, one that I've reviewed as not running any malicious code this way. The GitHub project is here, but you've spoiled the surprise now  https://github.com/keroserene/rickrollrc

Wouldn't rm -rf ~ delete the user's home directory, which they have ownership of? I don't ever recall needing root privileges for deleting home directories.
