I vote for MATE
Cinnamon (Mint 14) looked great and I spent a lot of time to get the "eyecandy" desktop looking great
The one morning when I logged in, I had no taskbar
I logged in with GNOME desktop (which worked thankfully) and I tried hard to re install each of the components in package manager.
I could not get the cinnamon desktop environment to work again
I started to wonder what else "just broke" behind the scenes
I went back to MATE and all is running normal again

*I have 3 machines running MATE 12,13 and now 14
My Advice is TOXIC

Personally, I prefer Cinnamon (I like the polished, yet clean look), running LMDE. The Debian testing base is as stable as it gets, and I haven't run into a single problem yet.
Device: Toshiba Satellite L855-S5372 / Processor: Quad Core Intel i7 3630QM Ivybridge 3.4GHz / RAM: 16GB
Linux Mint Debian/64 bit/Cinnamon - kernel version: 3.11.8-1
