Asus EeePc 1011cx with Intel GMA 3600

Post by jtouso »

Hi,
Excellent new Linux Mint 14.1, Mate or Cinnamon.
Also, LMDE 201303
Now the problem: always in live mode, Mint 14.1 cannot start and a little window appears with explanation about xorg.conf or similar (fatal error: non screen find) and s I understand, problems with Intel GMA 3600 graphic chipset.
With LMDE 201303, also in live mode, the screen is oen but in an uggly 800x600 resolution.Impossible to up to 1024x600
Same notebook, same GMA 3600
Also same 800x600 with LinuxLite (Ubuntu based distro)
In Xubuntu 13 beta (Ubuntu derivate), no problems and the resolution is 1024x600
Also no problems with Kanotix, Knoppix, Siduction or SnowLinux (debian distros) the resolution is 1024x600
Any idea?
Solutions?
Regards

With Mint 13 you can install the driver (cedarview-graphics-drivers) from Software Manager. This is the best driver for the hardware, available on 13 only.

Newer Mint editions may again get the 1024x600 screen working in future (recent versions of other distros already fixed the black screen as you said), but it will be quite limited since there is no such graphics driver that you can install on Mints later than 13. So I'd recommend you to use Mint 13 (or Ubuntu 12.04) and install the driver. It's currently the best you can get for the PowerVR graphics core (also called Intel GMA 3600 and 3650) in these Intel Atom CPUs.

Note that this does not apply to Intel Atom CPUs with other kinds of graphics (not GMA 3600 or 3650).

News!!
I try in live mode Mint 14 (not the 14.1 !!!!!) in Asus EeePc 1011cx GMA 3600 chipset and...WORKS!!! in 1024x600 monitor resolution.
Happy
But (now again sad) if I install Mint 14 to hard disk and reboot...the same problem you know: fatal error! No screen found!
But (happy again) in the next reboot, I edit the grub-loader and comment (#) the gfxload line. Press F-10 and voilà! Mint boots perfect with 1024x600 resolution.
What is happends to explain the difference between Live mode and the same distro after installed to hard disk?
How can I erase the line I comment with # to always start without problem?
When arrives Mint 15 with GMA 3600 support?

^ what AlbertP said!

I fought the exact same battle on a Gateway LT4008u with the exact CPU/GPU.

Although some distros can "work" by using the native resolution 1024x600, there is really no full graphics card support. The brightness keys, external monitor, for example would not work.

I normally use SalineOS (very stable and fast) and it "worked" on the laptop screen but there is no card support.

After testing several XFCE based distro, LM13 is the only one that allows the cedarview drivers therefore full graphics card support. LTS is an added bonus.

@ jtouso: Mint 14 will not just be fixed. Only in Mint 13 you can install the driver so please use Mint 13.

15 may again have the screen working (no X server "no screens found" error anymore), but then still I recommend 13 since 13 with the driver installed is giving a much better experience.

You can just look up cedarview-graphics-drivers in Software Manager in Mint 13 (type it in the search box at the top-right) and then click Install.

AlbertP
Any grub or other archive changes?
No grub.cfg or similar new orders or new lines?
Only install cedar drivers and reboot or no need to update-grub?

No, you don't need to change anything in Grub. In Mint 13 (Mate or Xfce preferred on these netbooks) it should be enough to install that package.

AlbertP

It is possible to install same cedarview drivers for the GMA 3600 in LinuxMint Debian edition?
If yes...which one Mint-Debian edition?

Mint Debian is less suitable since it's kind of a rolling release. It will upgrade its kernel and X server at times, becoming incompatible with the driver (which is no longer maintained, and has been removed from the Intel website). With Mint 13 it will keep working. Mint 13 in its current form still has support for years to come.

Hello everyone,

I have the same issue with the same asus netbook. However, I installer mint 13 mate but I can't find those drivers you talked about (cedar view-graphics-drivers...
Maybe I do it wrong, but I opened the software manager and typed it fully into the search box (upper right) but no results.

Are they been removed ? Or am I just doing it wrong ?

Sorry for those questions, but I just start with linux and it's a bit different then windows or mac ^^

Thx for your help !

You may need to install updates first to have the package list refreshed. Or you can launch Synaptic Package Manager and press the Refresh button. Also it's "cedarview" without a space, not "cedar view". After updating, you should be able to find it by typing cedarview into the search box of Software Manager (or Synaptic).

Just to add, you need to install the 32 bit version of Linux Mint (Maya) to use the cedarview drivers. :(

Also, I had to add "video=LVDS-1:d" to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX to get it to work.

Just an update from my experience...

After installing the drivers they run smooth but there is a lot of tearing during video play, even for a very low resolution video. Also while gaming there are strange visual corruptions with OpenGL.
