Mint takes forever to boot :(

Post by qarni »

Hello guys

I have installed mint into my Vaio Z laptop a couple of months ago and was working perfect. However, starting days ago it stopped connecting to wireless for no reason but it connect by wire which I can live with. I have had played around a lot to fix this problem with no luck.
The problem now is that it takes FOREVER to boot. It has showed me a wierd screen offering me to fix broken packages, test memoery and some other options.
I did updated the packages but nothing has happened. I was thinking (like Windows) to repaire the system but do not know how.

Your help will be highly appriciated as I NEED my laptop to behave stable for many upcoming projects ..

Cheers ..

Sounds like you may have hardware problems. You need to examine the logs in
/var/logs (dmesg, syslog, messages).

To add a different route than JSeymour offered, this turorial references an app called Bum, that helped fix my long boot time. The problem here was that sendmail was uninstalled, but there was still a startup entry for it during boot.
open a terminal and type
sudo apt-get install bum
enter root password, and accept the installation
Open "Bum" by typing in
sudo bum
or going through the mintmenu!
From here you can disable other things that werent possible to disable from "startup applications", such as hdd temps, scanner services, etc.
Be careful with this also!

If any of the above fails, here is my philosophy. I started with Linux last July on a new hdd. Completely gave up Windows. The first thing I did was create a boot, root and home partition, and a couple others. Over those months I have encountered problems, tried to fix them and probably screwed a few things up due to my limited Linux knowledge. I did the searching, posting, trying various suggested methods etc. That takes time. If this fails, I find it so much simpler to reformat and reinstall an OS or maybe an updated one, or maybe a different one. If I keep a few notes, I can reinstall all my programs, all my Firefox addons etc. in maybe an hour, and I am right back to where I started, maybe with better results this time. Hey, just my way of doing things.
