I use this nice and easy file synchronizer called FreeFileSync a lot, both in Windows (work) and Ubuntu-based Mint. It is in the default Ubuntu repositories. There's also a OSX one. I don't need that, but it shows that this easy to use file synchronizer is multiplatform and promising.
But not only is it not available in LMDE (or Debian itself, for that matter), it's very hard (impossible?) to find a custom repository for it.
Wouldn't it be cool if this mainstream synchronizer was available in LMDE? Yes it would.
What would be the best place for me to ask if someone in charge can make this happen?
Can FreeFileSync be included in debian.linuxmint.com ?

I just donated $5,00 USD, maybe that helps.
Re: Can FreeFileSync be included in debian.linuxmint.com ?
I googled for a million years and it turns out Debian only has two users, and both don't care about FreeFileSync. They keep recommending eachother different solutions just so that no one has to package this for Debian.
On Launchpad they say a Debian package is available, but it's not.
I don't care about alternatives. I want FreeFileSync and I should be able to get it just as easy as I can on Ubuntu, Windows or OSX.
Until then, here is how you can curse in the church, as root:

Until then, here is how you can curse in the church, as root:
- apt-add-repository ppa:freefilesync/ffs
(This takes care of adding the key) - sed -i 's/wheezy/lucid/g' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/freefilesync-ffs-wheezy.list
(This changes non-existing debian-wheezy release to Ubuntu's lucid one, which is compatible with current wheezy, in the ppa source.) - apt-get update && apt-get install freefilesync
Notes
- The raring version is not available yet. The quantal version depends on Unity because Ubuntu, so you're probably gonna have to go for the Lucid one. Didn't test Maverick.
- This will break sooner or later. As wheezy gets updated, lucid will remain lucid. Dependencies break.
- Remember, when updating becomes a problem you're gonna have to remove this Ubuntu package so that it won't lock versions of dependencies.
- apt-add-repository can only be executed as root. Not with sudo. It is available in the python-software-properties package.

Thanks so much for the response.
Meanwhile, in other news Zenju did start making Debian builds as of 5.15. But only for now. Consider it a popularity contest.
Unfortunately, these are .tar.gz archives. Someone still needs to make .deb packages out of them.

that would be ideal but you don't need it.Redsandro wrote:Someone still needs to make .deb packages out of them.
download the FreeFileSync_5.15_Debian_7.0_64-bit.tar.gz
extract it somewhere and run the FreeFileSync executable
zerozero@solydk ~/builds/freefilesync/FreeFileSync $ ls -lA

Yes, that works. But we did invent computers to make out lives easier, right?
I wanna click somewhere and have it automatically install and pop up in my apps menu when I type "Free".
Meanwhile, your solution is the only solution and we're gonna have to do that manually.

@Redsandro
I'd love to see FreeFileSync appear in the repos of LMDE, too.
Would have been quicker than googling around to come here.
@zerozero
Thanks a lot.

Re: Can FreeFileSync be included in debian.linuxmint.com ?
Anyone tried 7.2 FreeFileSync yet? Can't seem to get it to execute. Have Raphaella (17.2); extracted tar.gz file, but won't execute.
Any thoughts?

As the last post on this thread is over 18 months old it would be much better to start a new thread with your question
You are also posting in an LMDE section of the forum - you are using Main Edition
