The Worst of All Mint Decsions

Post by malligt »

EDIT: This April 3, 2013, via Mint update.... edition 1.6 of MATE is just a carbon copy of Gnome Classic...except for the yuckky minty cr*ppy imitation Mint coloring....JUST AWEFFUL...YUCK!!!!

What a bad management distaster....

do you realize:

You Just Blew Up 100% my old (former) Mate Desktop.....

Thanks for no Warning about the ramifiactions of this update-to -be whatsoever....

You just trashed everything on my desktop....

Very Frustrated for me personally....

I'm going back to 12.04 LTS Ubuntu for now---at least I will know what the F++ck is going on....before I just lose everything( which is normally notified ny Mint Team before new uodates)

What A F++cking Disaster.....apologize ti Clem for my personal expression...but this is WAYYY out of character for the MINT dev team.

Bad decision Clem!!

BAD! Very bad!

If I wanted old Gnome 2 Classic, I would not waste my time with you and Mint team...I would just go to Gnome 3.8 and get it form Softpedia and/or
additional sources.

Thanks for 3 hrs of my life of Mint bulls*it! updates (MATE) I will never get back in my life.

+1.
This is exactly the kind of bull---- that people laugh about Linux-based operating systems. ****'ing around with my system without warning. Not even my keyboard's repeat delay is set up correctly now. :x

calm down
as far as i can (i might be wrong tho) mate 1.6 is NOT yet in any mint repo; meaning this that you should have another repo added to your sources.list

can you both please share the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -r
before starting shouting Clem&cia

let's see: undo the update is almost impossible and surely will break more than fix.

but i have a feeling that it's all (almost all) cosmetic changes;
- have you tried to set again the theme/wallpaper/icon set that you were using before the update?
- and the same for the panel applets (if they are amiss)?

as far as i know there's 2 issues:
- mintmenu is not yet ported to 1.6 (there's other's menus tho in the meantime available and Clem will have it working for mint 15 meaning shortly)
- mate-terminal: issue reported here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 57#p705534

Since I'm really ticked off at this MATE 1.6, I don't mind blowing up the whole thing and re-install. Before I do that, I'll try something crazy. Great if it works. If not, I'll install Xubuntu. I've a few machines running Xubunt 12.04, and I'm happy with them.
I'll deactivate the mate-desktop repo, purge mate-desktop, and then reinstall mate-desktop with Mint repo and see what happens.

Unfortunately my desperate attempt to get back Mate 1.4 didn't work, so I reinstalled my box with Xubuntu.
Xfce isn't the greatest desktop environment out there, but the best thing about it is that the developers haven't ****'ed it up like Gnome3 (and MATE 1.6 is in danger of doing the same. Just when people get comfortable with it, WHAM! ).

I think you are being too critical. Clem and the MATE team have done a great job with MATE and knowing what sort of deprecated stuff has been removed, the only surprise is so few issues with the change over. The only way to get MATE to a better place is get rid of deprecated stuff.

The error you made LethalFang was not doing a backup before trying the new desktop. I use remastersys for this purpose maybe you should check it out.

Mate 1.6 is great for me apart from the mate-terminal issue. I had the fixed font set in Mate 1.4 to Monospace - size 10, so something removed that font. I added the font again and the mate-terminal issue disappeared.

The only other issue is that I cannot get rid of the panel at the top, as I use AWN. The change in configuration editor that I did for Mate 1.4 did not work for Mate 1.6, so i am looking into this.

However to say that this is the worst of all Mint Decisions is incorrect. The worst decision would have been NOT doing a Mate desktop and leaving us stuck with Gnome 3.

Thanks again Clem and the MATE team. Do not let one poster demoralise you, the rest of us appreciate your efforts.

Seriously  ,after leaving Ubuntu in disgust for what they have done to their desktop and having found Mate as a viable (although sometimes incomplete or a bit buggy) alternative,in the future I should expect to be stuck with a clone of the Gnome 2 fallback desktop that made me switch to Mint/Mate in the first place (well,Unity/Gnome3 aside, which of course are even worse)?

I agree the MATE team has done a great job. MATE 1.4 is my favorite desktop environment.
But I feel like every now and then they pull a prank on me and completely mess me up.

In this case, however, it's kind of looking like user error, no? After expressing reservations, myself, in another thread, it turns out the users that got surprised by this one were the ones pulling from "non-standard" repos, no?

That being said, and w/o my having an understanding on how release numbering works on this project: Should a bump from 1.4 to 1.6 result in this much change? Or has the amount of change been overblown?

It's a non-Mint repo, but it's pretty standard repo as it came directly from MATE. It wasn't MATE-dailybuild repo either. So it wasn't a Mint problem. It was MATE problem. It's especially befuddling because the very reason people migrated to MATE is that they (we) didn't want Gnome3 and wanted stability in our desktop. And MATE did exactly what Gnome did, which was to blow everything up.
The change was enough to blow up all the desktop configurations I've set up over the past year.

I'm pretty sure once MATE 1.6 becomes mature and ready, it'll be great. MATE 1.4 was pretty darn good with some very minor bugs that I could live with.
But at this point I really value stability more than anything else. Xfce isn't the greatest Desktop Environment in the world, but it's good enough and their developers don't play prank on me every year or so.

POLA is something developers are supposed to keep in mind.
