Newbie asks: Evolution or Claws?... Vote & Advise
Howdy! I'm using the Xfce desktop. I'm pretty ignorant about Linux.
Ignorant newbie question: Can Evolution (part of Gnome proj.) be used in the Xfce desktop? What about Claws? What do you think of them (especially reliability)?
What I want:
- separate file for each message - in other words, not MBOX format! (Maildir or MH are fine, I think - discuss?)
- clear migration from Thunderbird - in other words, away from MBOX.
- multiple accounts.
- incoming & outgoing mail go into same mailbox (yes, that's the way I like it).
- threading with all threads permanently expanded.
I will be writing & sending & receiving & reading mail from my Mint guest inside a virtual machine.
I will be writing & reading mail in my WinXP host outside the virtual machine.
The WinXP host doesn't have networking (yes, it's possible).
The mailboxes will be in a shared folder accessible in guest & host.

Thanks Much - Mark.

I've been using claws for years now, it's an excellent email client. I've never really liked the Outlook wanna be Evolution for it's bloated and for me has always been a bit buggy. Claws Mail is fast and with a few plugins like tnef (for reading MS email), beautify (for html) it's excellent. Very fast and stable, give it a shotmarkfilipak wrote:Howdy! Thanks, Marcus! I just installed it and I'm configuring it to get ready to do some experiments. Do you mind some questions?
I'm very happy to see this: 'File' > 'Import mbox file...'.
In 'Configuration' > 'Preferences' > 'Mail Handling' > 'Sending' [_] 'Save sent messages to Sent folder': I assume that if I check-mark it, then it will do what it says, but what if I don't check-mark it? - the reason I'm asking rather than testing is that I can't get sending to work...
Is there a Claws Forum?
Ciao & Thanks - Mark.

What you need to do is hit the properties on the folders and set the use for them. I use IMAP and have my sent mail go to the sent-mail on my IMAP providers folder instead of saving it locally.

Well, I got sending to work, but it appears that if I don't save the sent message to the 'Sent' folder, it doesn't get saved at all. That's a show-stopper. I'd like to get the sent mail and the received mail together in the same mailbox.
Got any ideas, Marcus... of course you can wait to reply until such time as you're at your main computer.
Ciao & Thanks Again - Mark.

I'll have to look at my settings when I get home. Its in the config where you designate the roles/properties of the folders.

You beat me to the punch, Marcus. I found that where sent mail is saved can be specified when the account settings are open, not when the account is created. It's very much like Thunderbird. Now, there's just one more potential hitch. Can my whole mailbox structure (what Thunderbird would call my 'profile') be moved to a shared disk (eh.... '/mnt/fs_shared' I believe)?
G'night - Mark.

You should be able to, I don't store any email locally and keep everything on the server via IMAP so I can't help you there. Google around a bit and see if you can hit the Claws Mail wiki or maybe a forum out there.markfilipak wrote:You beat me to the punch, Marcus. Thanks, Marcus. Yesterday I emailed Paul Mangan, the 'Claws team' in the UK. He sent me a link (http://www.claws-mail.org/MLs.php) to the mailing list that's not reachable via their web site's links.
Re: Newbie asks: Evolution or Claws?... Vote & Advise
For another opinion, Claws is, and would always be my first choice. It does all that I need. Evolution woud be second choice and Thunderbird last choice.
