Cant see Other PCs on network

Post by Tirnaog »

Have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Win7 PCs logging into it.
Various shares are setup on the server and the various client PCs.

New laptop with win8 and now Linux Mint 14 cinnamon 64bit.
The win 8 side sees all of the network.
The Mint doesn't seem to see anything. It is on the internet.
And I set the Public folder to shared.
One of the win7 clients can see this shared folder and copy files to it.

at the MINt cmdline I tried sudo apt-get install namp 192.168.*.*
Which is the servers IP addr I get: Unable to locate package

Is this command like a PING command in windows?

I also tried the Win7 client ip address in Nemos addr bar but it couldn't find it either.
Seems like mint is having IP issue but I am not Linux or network savy to fix this.
Very new to Linux.

Can anyone help me?
Thanks

I've stopped using windows completely now for about 2 years so I can't test this out. Maybe it will help you.

On your mint machine open a browser and in the URL type:

Code: Select all

smb://192.168.x.x
Where "192.168.x.x" is the ip of one of your windows machines that has file sharing turned on. You should be able to see your shares that way.

If that works then the sharing is working but you may need to adjust your windows Domain/work group name in mint. I don't know what windows defaults to in windows 7 or 8, (Back on XP pro it was "WORKGROUP" so you will have to discover that first on your window machines.

To set it on your mint machine go to : Control Center>Shared Folders> General Properties tab and match the Domain to what you discovered from your windows machines.

good luck.

Thanks for the reply.

My network is not a Workgroup though. Its a Windows domain server setup.
I was playing around last night with them and with various Linux cmds I found online.
I still have the problem but now I know a bit more.

The Linux pc cant seem to see any PCs IP address. But the win7 client can see the shared public folder
I setup on the Linux PC. I even copied files over to it from the win7 pc.

when I tried a nmap cmd with the servers ip address it said it couldn't find it.
And when I tried the win7 client pcs ip address it couldn't find that either.

So now I am totally lost. Why can the windows PCs see it and Linux PC cant see anything?
But the Linux PC can get on the internet and does have an IP address.

In terminal try typing:

Code: Select all

nemo smb://192.168.x.x
I've shared your problem for years with my network and this always solved it. Be sure the URL matches the device you wish to connect to.

This feels like a firewall issue to me. This is what I would do at this point based on you your comments.

I would turn off all of the firewall stuff in windows where your share is, then from the term in mint, run a ping to the ip address of the windows box. Maybe disabling the firewall wil allow mint to see the windows share. If it is a firewall issue you may just need to tweak your firewall settings on the windows side to allow the connection from your mint box

Just had a thought.
My Client PC and the server have Ip addrs below the Routers Starting range.
Would that stop MINT from seeing or accessing them?

I am not entirely sure (my last days of client/server support are some years away already), but if I remember correctly starting with the 2K or 2K3 version of active directory Microsoft did not allow outsiders to connect to a domain ressource. In that case you have to make the Linux notebook a member ofthat domain, but I don't know whether this is possible and how this can be achieved.

So trying again. Posting this from Firefox on MINT. :) on the laptop.
Still no luck getting Mint to see the network. I get WORKGROUP and MIDDLEEARTH in the network folder on nemo.
I downloaded and installed Likewise. Filled in the boxes and clicked join.
Failed. Heres the log file I got back:

Re: Cant see Other PCs on network

Also I just tried pinging the win7 pcs ip address in the terminal window.
And it recieved packets no problem.

So it seems Mint can see the PC but I can't see it thru the file explore app, NEMO.
Is this maybe a nemo issue ?
Is their another File Explorer app I could try?

Sorry never used likewise so can't be help there.
I get WORKGROUP and MIDDLEEARTH in the network folder on nemo.
Which of these domains do you want to connect to?

If your network folder is showing them, What happens when you click on one to connect? Do you expect both to be there?

going back to your first post it looks like you were referencing nmap?

you can install that with "sudo apt-get install nmap"

then run in terminal:

Code: Select all

nmap <IP of your server>
This will tell you what ports are open on your server, I don't expect that this will show anything earth shattering at this point, but worth a look.

Middleearth is what I am trying to connect to.
When on double-click on it it just sits there and comes back eventually with it cant mount shares.
nmap dosent seem to see the server/win7 clients PCs IP addresses.

nmap dosent seem to see the server/win7 clients PCs IP addresses.
Potentially due to firewall rules. You still might consider testing without the firewall turned on.

In Mint what does the Control Center>Shared Folders>General Properties show?

Sorry all,

This week just ended with me pouring a pint of water over my new laptop.
So my Linux experiment will have to wait for a bit.

:(

Thanks for all the help, hope to be back soon.

One hint here. A physical connect (ping) doesn't warrent connectivity to domain ressources, those are two completely different issues.

You have two ways to getting it work:

1. Get the domain to accept the Linux Client. Unfortunately my knowledge there is very limited and you would have to rely on someone else. It would most likely include to make the machine known inside the domain (user account and machine account) as well as making ressources available to it. Additionally you would have to make the Linux box ask and accept Kerberos tickets and use a domain membership. While this is all easy to achieve on a Windows machine, I haven't got the slightest clue how to achieve it in a hybrid environment.
Maybe this howto might help: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Activ ... nbindHowto

2. This would be the easy part and compromise the security idea of the domain. You could employ domain objects that switch of security mechanism in the domain basicly opening it up for everyone to connect. This would allow your Linux box to connect without further hustle. I had to do such a thing to connect a production laser to a win2k3 domain, while the laser only spoke dos. Quite a piece of work, but I got round it. Unfortunately I had to deactivate a lot of domain mechanisms so that the domain waa nothing more then a workgroup with some fancy features ... not adviseable.
