Segfault when opening Firefox and File Manager

Postby DiscreteCircle on Mon Apr 01, 2013 10:00 pm

I am running on 32 bit Linux Mint 13 Maya.

Firefox v. 19 crashes on startup. When I downgraded to v. 11, I could open it in safe mode but it would crash whenever I opened a tab containing a pdf or tried to access gmail.
A report of one of these crashes can be found here. Running firefox -g and obtaining the backtrace gives a similar output.
There seemed to be a problem with finding the mime types, so I created standard mimeapps.list files (which were missing previously) in the /usr/share/mdm/applications and /usr/share/applications, but the issue was not resolved.

Similarly, I am getting segfaults associated with libc-2.15.so and libgio-2.0.so.0.3200.3 (checking dmesg after the program crashes) for several programs, including gthumb, the desktop file manager, and libreoffice whenever I open the save dialog.

For all the crashes, dmesg gives output similar to:
Code: Select all
gthumb[3071]: segfault at 875f3000 ip 00fa1718 sp bfa72adc error 4 in libc-2.15.so[f24000+1a3000]
caja[1717]: segfault at 87c9ea6f ip 05321718 sp bf882ccc error 4 in libc-2.15.so[52a4000+1a3000]

Thanks for the help in advance.

I ran memtest86+ earlier and everything is fine.

I'm bumping this because I still haven't been able to figure out what is wrong with the libraries that makes them crash when trying to access mime types.
