xfce4-xfapplet-plugin missing

Post by vbj »

I would like to have mintMenu in the xfce4 panel.

According to this post: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=129651 xfce4-xfapplet-plugin should be installed, but it is not in the repositories from my sources list:

deb http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/linux ... ian/latest testing main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/linux ... t/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/linux ... multimedia testing main non-free
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import backport romeo
deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian wheezy main contrib non-free
deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian wheezy main contrib

Am I missing something?

Hi

What you are missing, is that the instructions are for the Mint Main xfce version (Ubuntu based), from your sources list, I see you are running LMDE (Debian based). The files are not in the LMDE repo.

It is possible (you have to TEMPORARILY add the Mint main repo), and install xfapplet, and mintmenu (It will add lots of Mate files), but be advised this is NOT recommended, as it may break something. Its your choice, but if you do wish to try make sure to back up first, as something may break. Remove the Mint main repo as soon as you are done.

Personally I prefer the std xfce menu, supplemented by "application finder" . It works real well as a menu.

and STACK your favorite apps all with one launcher

Since I started using this method, I dont miss MintMenu at all....

Thanks Gene C,

Looks as if it's not possible:

Code: Select all

xfce4-xfapplet-plugin : Depends: libxfce4util6 (>= 4.9.0) but it is not installable
Depends: xfce4-panel (>= 4.9.2) but 4.8.6-4 is to be installed
So I'll leave it for now. Having used xfce for more than five years on Arch Linux I felt like trying something different - but the specs on this machine isn't high enough for running mate natively:

Code: Select all

CPU[-Single core Intel Atom N270 (-UP-) clocked at 1600.000 Mhz-] Kernel[-3.2.0-4-486 i686-] Up[-5:01-] Mem[-761.6/2017.2MB-] HDD[-160.0GB(19.9% used)-] Procs[-197-] Client[-Shell-] inxi[-1.4.23-]
What I thought I could use was the search function in the mint menu - I miss deskbar-applet so much

Ah! You need XFCE 4.10. I had 4.10 it installed from the xfcenext repo a while back.

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.siduction.org/xfcenext unstable main #"Siduction XFCEnext"
Check your PM's....

Looks interesting, but the siduction repo leaves me with a catch 22 - I can't update because I have no key - and I can't get the key from siduction because I can't update.

I've looked around for a solution, google'd etc, but haven't found a solution.

just an unrelated note:
unless you have a special pinning rule, the 2 last repos will mess up your install because they are newer than the default lmde repos and you can end up in dependency hell.

Thanks zerozero - unrelated or not - I've commented the lines out. I placed the lines there for some reason - but I've forgotten why now

Hi,

PMFJI but I was about to post a similar question, and I read this thread with great interest. I just would like to check:

MintMenu _can_ work in LMDE XFCE UP6, can't it? I installed the mintmenu package (it didn't pull too many dependances) and if I start it manually, I get a MintMenu 'button' bang in the middle of the screen (more like a tiny application window). But if I click that button, it does open a Mint Menu. Then I tried to add it to my panel with a launcher, but this also launches my 'menu' in the middle of the screen...

So I have to get that xfce-xfapplet-plugin, and, following GeneC, I added the Siduction repo. (and got the same error as vbj.) and Linux Mint Main (Nadia) repo.

Then I looked at the xfce-xfapplet-plugin in Synaptic. It has a good number of dependances, but obviously not all of the XFCE 4.10 packages. Could I safely install _just_ that (I did nothing so far)? I'm in no hurry to do the full upgrade to XFCE 4.10, but OTTH, if it's safer...

TIA - regards, Daniel

At this time I would recommend NOT trying to install MintMenu in LMDE (unless you are quite experimental, and dont mind things breaking). Wait for xfapplet to come to LMDE.

To install xfapplet now, you have to get it from Nadia (Ubuntu based, and not recommended). It is a MATE applet, and will bring in lots of Mate dependencies. It needs xfce 4.10 apparently, and that is yet another hurdle.

If you did add Nadia and sidcution xfcenext repo, Be sure to disable (or delete them) after experimenting).
Again this is not recommended...

I'm not experimental, and I do mind things breaking!
Wait for xfapplet to come to LMDE.
That's comforting. I thought that, since LMDE XFCE got no new ISO, it would not receive such updates, and I had to try something else. No problem, I'm patient, I can wait...

... but will they go as far as updating all that?

Already done.

Thank you for advice - Regards, Daniel

Just download the *.deb file for xfapplet and maybe the mintmenu here: http://packages.linuxmint.com/list.php?release=Nadia

I can't install these Nadia debs under LMDE; I they lead to unsatisfiable dependancies errors!

E.g., xfce4-xfapplet-plugin_0.1.0-4mint2_amd64.deb wants libxfce4util6 which can't be found in LMDE (there's only libxfce4util4).

It looks like it wants them because it's been built on a system with them (e.g. Nadia). If you look at the source package, it wants merely this:

Code: Select all

Build-Depends: debhelper (>= 4.1.0), autotools-dev, cdbs, xfce4-panel-dev (>= 4.7.7), libmatecorba-dev, libmatepanelapplet-dev, libxfcegui4-dev
So you can build it yourself in LMDE. I used this simple tutorial for the build process (and even simpler - I didn't bother to change the package version).
  1. sudo apt-get install devscripts build-essential
  2. dget -u http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main/x/xfce4-xfapplet-plugin/xfce4-xfapplet-plugin_0.1.0-4mint2.dsc
  3. sudo apt-get install debhelper autotools-dev cdbs xfce4-panel-dev libmatecorba-dev libmatepanelapplet-dev libxfcegui4-dev
  4. cd xfce4-xfapplet-plugin-0.1.0
  5. dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
  6. cd ..
  7. sudo dpkg -i xfce4-xfapplet-plugin_0.1.0-4mint2_amd64.deb (or i386, depending on your system's architecture)
Warning: this applet may become obsolete soon (when MATE will be updated to 1.6). It uses obsolete MATE libraries like libmatecorba (not present anymore in MATE 1.6). Watch out :)

Thank you (again) Monsta for your detailed instructions.

But in order to overcome this:
Monsta wrote: this applet may become obsolete soon (when MATE will be updated to 1.6). It uses obsolete MATE libraries like libmatecorba (not present anymore in MATE 1.6).
... perhaps, before going through your detailed steps, I'd better wait for MATE 1.6 to come to LMDE?

From the Linux Mint welcome page, I understand it is already in the regular Linux Mint edition, so hopefully it won't take too long.

I'd say - wait for xfce4-xfapplet-plugin to show up in Olivia repo. That means, until Olivia XFCE edition shows up in the news. MATE 1.6 coming to LMDE won't require xfapplet to be updated (it's not even in the repo anyway), while having mintMenu in Olivia XFCE will. :)
