Who came up with this ugly MATE 1.6 or copy of GNOME 3.8?
Check it out. Gnome 3.8 "Classic" or MATE 1.6. Looks like the same exact thing to my eyes.
https://help.gnome.org/misc/release-notes/3.8/
"Classic Mode
Classic mode is a new feature for those people who prefer a more traditional desktop experience. Built entirely from GNOME 3 technologies, it adds a number of features such as an application menu, a places menu and a window switcher along the bottom of the screen. Each of these features can be used individually or in combination with other GNOME extensions."
This update simply showed up today in Mintupdate automatically (and without any warning--- on the Mint forums, or with any advance on any Mint BB) in my Mint updates today? I JUST HATE it! I feel that I should have been able to opt out of it.
To me, it's just a horrible "Nightmare On Elmstreet" copy of the recently released Gnome 3 Classic---- which is now a part of Gnome 3.8 (just released last week). And to me, the new Minty MATE version is ugly as h*ll.
Reminds me of something that fell into my bathroom sink from my tube of CREST toothpaste.

Re: Who came up with this ugly MATE 1.6 aka copy GNOME 3.8?
You can always try forcing the older version of MATE with synaptic. You might break stuff doing that though.

I like CREST toothpaste too...the coincidence of the ugly Mint MATE 1.6 color was spot-on at my house.....

i already answered you in the other topic: mate 1.6 is not in any mint repo, you installed from other repo; it's not a mint update.

Here are my sources....they have followed exactly the instructions from Mint blog...
I believe you will find this is how we were instructed to get the latest Cinnamon 1.6 and/or MATE 1.4 desktops when Mint 14 was released.
With all due respect:
Nothing change-wise was ever directed (that I can find) past this. Hence my repos remain unchanged from the original Clem instruction (above).....
And in my "newbie" status, Yes, the only update I performed was a "Mint update" to get this....

Re: Who came up with this ugly MATE 1.6 or copy of GNOME 3.8
This was the preferred method to get the MATE desktop prior to Clem releasing it thru "backports".
But I can't find anything that EVER told me to remove the mate-desktop.org source after Clem released the Mint 14 backport instruction.

Re: Who came up with this ugly MATE 1.6 or copy of GNOME 3.8
Here's the Blog announcement: http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2225. I've looked through it and cannot find anywhere that it told you to change your repositories. All it tells you to do is to tick the box to enable Backports. This would only enable updates put through by Mint, not directly from the MATE developers. Maybe you can point out to me where it told you to get the updates outside the normal Mint channels. Following these directions would not cause MATE 1.6 to come through as it has not been placed into Mint Backports.

I hope this sheds some light on the timeline here....
I believe you will find that prior to the blog release (date) you cite, there were methods/procedures given on the forum as to how to update MATE to 1.4.
You'd have to look back in the area of July-August (I think) 2012 archives of forum posts to find it.
That is what I had followed, and voila I got the new Mate 1.4 last summer.
Then Clem announced via the blog how to get Mate 1.4 through "backports" .
Nothing was ever said in the blog, or anywhere else that I can recall, about removing that ppa, for those of us who had updated with the earlier method.
So two days ago when MATE 1.6 was released by mate-desktop.org, that old ppa was evidentally still present in my system, and when I ran mint update, bang! I got MATE 1.6.

Might the OP have been meaning the instructions of one of the posts in this thread?tdockery97 wrote:I've looked through it and cannot find anywhere that it told you to change your repositories.

If the above is true, then this is a case of user-error. While I sympathize (as I have managed to shoot myself in the virtual foot many times in the past and, probably, will do so many more times in the future), when someone gets impatient and tries an unsupported solution instead of waiting on an official one - and borks some part of their system, because of it - that individual user is to blame, not the developers or their product.
I posted this because I am new to Mint and, perhaps because of that, can see where a potential new user might be dissuaded from trying Mint if he/she thinks that the distro might become screwed up on its own (as opposed to the end-user screwing it up ).
To the OP: I do hope you manage to fix your issue. If I were you, what I would do would be to return to the thread(s) that you got your original instructions from and post in it. I am guessing - from the lack of other threads about the issue that you are experiencing - that the people in that thread figured things out (possibly by having removed the extra sources they added just before they followed the official instructions in Clem's blog which, again, is what I would do, but who knows?) and that they, therefore, would know what you would need to do - or, more probably, undo - in order to fix things.
Best regards,

Re: Who came up with this ugly MATE 1.6 or copy of GNOME 3.8
This is the essence of "backports": making newer (current) software officially tested and available for older releases of your distro. LM14 is current so there is nothing to backport to itHardyH wrote:Works only on Mint 13, does not work on Mint 14
H.
For now, MATE 1.6 and Gnome 3.8 must be considered as experimental versions from a Linux Mint POV.
Re: Who came up with this ugly MATE 1.6 or copy of GNOME 3.8
Please do not break Linux once again. Do not change the layout of Mate We don't need your improvements if it's going to make it another gnome 3. Why would you fix it if it's not broken yet

WE do not make the MATE desktop, WE are not the MATE devs, WE have the MATE desktop as an available Mint version, but WE do not MAKE MATE. We have a version of MATE in OUR repos that are the SUPPORTED MATE packages, if YOU added a repo other one that says linuxmint in it, that is on you, if you know how to add a repo, you should know how to remove a repo as well. And when you added that repo, (I am assuming it was a while ago as MATE 1.4 has been supported for some time now), YOU took the risk of using software that was not tested by the Mint team, and therefore, WE are not resposible for what YOU do/did to your system, or software that is installed from repos that WE do not control.Brahim wrote:Please do not break Linux once again. This is an issue that I see far too often, people add repos that we have nothing to do with, and then complain to US that their system is not working right because of something that came from an outside repo. If you want the experience that is intended by the Mint devs, then you should use ONLY Mint repos and supported applications, outside repos and apps are completely out of our control.

They won't screw up the user interface. They changed the config-backend to avoid duplication and spare them the work of maintaining an obsolete clone of the old gconf. The only thing that will change for the user is that they will have to use dconf-editor instead of mateconf-editor to edit settings that don't have a GUI to change them.
And when updating from 1.4 to 1.6 you will lose your panel-settings, so you will have to manually drag the panels around and add applets again, to restore your old setup. You will have to do this one single time and never again for the foreseeable future.
Oh, and of course wait a little for an updated mint-menu. No big deal.
Cheers
