problem with 4 partitions win7/mint14.1 cin32 install
im trying to install mint cinnamon 14.1 32bit along side windows 7 on my HP G61 laptop.
i have a C: sda2 ,a RECOVERY sda3, and an open partition of 100gig as" / ext2" sda4. i removed the Win "SYSTEM" partition of 104mb and shrank the C: to make room for the ext2 and for a 4th partition as a Swap.
im running a live install on usb. when i get into the install stage the partition manager shows a " SYSTEM" partition sda1 with mint running on it.
and the partition manager wont let me add another partition for the swap file. Max of 4 partitions.
any way around this?
i need the windows system for other work and cant remove the Recovery or the C: partitions.
the installer only gives 2 options, Install over windows or Other, not along side windows
an automated installer that keeps newbees from banging on the partitions will help with getting your OS out and about a bit easier.
maybe run in ram for install ? like Puppy
Help!!!

Re: problem with 4 partitions win7/mint install
There is a limit: MAX 4 primary partitions on ONE hdd.
Try create extended partition and next some logical and install linux on them.
Should work
Ps.: use Gparted from linux Live CD/DVD.

Re: problem with 4 partitions win7/mint14.1 cin32 install
i used Gparted to create partitions and am a newbeee to it
a bit more detail in how to and i may get it right the first time
i was about to start puppy 5.5 on cd when you wrote back, that was fast Thanks!
i removed puppy from my usb and put the mint on it.
Why the limitation on partitions per hdd ?
makes no sence to me linux should just see the hdd as a file system right?

Change sda 4 to Extended partition first?
then logical on sda 4?
what about the swap?
then logical on sda 4?
what about the swap?
Re: problem with 4 partitions win7/mint14.1 cin32 install
Ok, make something like this:
<--------------------------this is entire HDD------------------------------->
<----C:\---><--RECOVERY--><----------------EXTENDED----------------->
................................<---SWAP----><-----/----><---/HOME----->
C:\ - Primary
Recovery - Primary
Next is biiiiig extended partition and inside her are logical:
- swap,
- Your "root partition marked as "/" (here goes linux installation)
- Your /Home partition (for Your programs, configs etc.)
For / and /Home use ext4 filesystem.

In puppy 5.5 , can move files from recovery partition sda3" to "c" checked for reboot, all good with windows.
Del partition sda4 and sda3 , make extended, create as extended, what to name "label" and what next for
Have sda1, sda2 ,sda3 extended 115.50 GIB --- --- > unallocated 115.50 GIB

Label your partitions as You wish For Linux there is no difference.
Size? Hmm.. also freely as you need.
I have two hdd's.
sda - for Win Seven:

Grub is on sda in mbr.

Where did You installed Grub? On sda1? eeeehhh.. wrong ;P
Install them directly on sda (not on sda1 or sda2..)
Now use this to fix Your Grub bootmanager:
http://www.webupd8.org/2011/06/boot-rep ... ssues.html
Boot in Live CD, install Boot-Repair, and fix your Grub.
