For sound - you may need to have the modem turned on (switch on the bottom sometimes)

You need to up the flux in order to capacitate the incoming candela... Or post the output of

what happens if you run:
in a terminal? There should be no [MM] below the bars (means they are muted)

I believe this is a case where you have to enable the modem to get sound...

Unfortunately hard to say - many laptops has a switch on the bottom (or on a side)How do I enable the modem

This might work
I've seen it mentioned as a separate solution but also as follows
Can't guarantee it works, but it should not break your system on the other hand

sudo aptitude install linux-backports-modules-generic
Now you don't have an acer but a gateway so change acer to gatewaysudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
Enter the following line at the bottom:
options snd-hda-intel model=acer
Can't guarantee it works, but it should not break your system on the other hand
