Hi. I am totally new to Linux and it does get confusing.
After I downloaded Linux Mint 14 I burnt it to DVD with Nero Image burner and tried to check it with md5sum but it doesn't work. On restart it won't open automatically but I can hold F8 and DVD is listed and will open from there. On 'My Computer' page under 'Devices with removable storage' it says 'install linux mint 878 MB.
My question.
When Mint opens the desktop shows the Logo and 3 icons top left corner, Computer Home and Install - and bottom left are 5 icons, menu, show desktop, Firefox, terminal, and files. They all open with no problem. So I'm wondering if I should install it on the chance everything will work.
My OS is windows xp home

Don't isntall it. If I remember correctly, 878MB is smaller than the original size of the Linux Mint ISO.
Better download again and burn it.
By the way, have a looked at http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
It burns the ISO to a USB flash drive. It is faster and you don't waste a DVD

Min14 Cinnamon is 881 MB. KDE and MATE DVD are slighter bigger plus Windows uses a different standard for file size than Linux.

Q. Wouldn't it be better to get one with the codecs?

Yes, download the iso with codecs. Saves you the time of installing them manually. And mp3, video, and flash works out of the box

Would the linux mint 14 download like this one --> linuxmint-14-cinnamon-dvd-32bit.iso - (Download Torrent) 884 MB, on the tracker statistics page have all the needed codecs even tho codecs aren't stated? and it can be downloaded to USB flashdrive and installed directly from the flashdrive?

Yes that is right. Codecs are included in that ISO. You can "burn" the ISO using http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/and you can use to boot into a live environment and install Linux Mint. Enjoy.
