New To Cinnamon, A Few Questions

Post by jlacroix82 »

I'm checking out Cinnamon and liking it so far. I'm normally a KDE person but Cinnamon is really growing on me. Anyway, I have a few questions and hoping you guys can help.

First, I notice that now whenever I log in, there are no icons on the desktop. I am not sure if this is a new problem or if I haven't noticed it before. If I open Nemo, my desktop icons return. This is really strange. Is it normal for desktop icons to function only after starting Nemo?

Second, I notice the minimize animation is really strange. Instead of animating the window falling to the panel when minimized, the application fades into the center of the screen. I don't see anywhere in the settings application to customize this, and I'm pretty sure the windows used to animate falling downward toward the panel when minimizing.

Third, does Cinnamon undirect full screen windows by default? I wasn't able to pull up any information on Google about this, I'm hoping that it does because I do like to play games.

Thank you!

Open the menu and go to Cinnamon Settings > Effects and you will see how to change the window effects you describe.
My Cinnamon LM 13 has always been erratic with desktop icons, so I disabled them for start up,
Cinnamon Settings > Desktop
now things only appear there if I place them manually, otherwise Cinnamon is very good and stable, IMHO.
Incidentally I am about to move from Cinnamon to KDE myself, how do you find KDE as a regular user?

In regards to the icon issue, I fixed it previously by adding "nemo" (or it might have been "nemo -n" or something similar) to the startup applications.
For whatever reason it wasn't there until I added it, and since nemo handles the Cinnamon desktop, no nemo = no icons.

Just for the heck of it, what version of Cinnamon are you using? I started with Cinnamon and moved to KDE. KDE has more stuff. I didn't know Cinnamon was doing animations. Doh!

I've just changed from Mint 13 Cinnamon to Mint 13 KDE for a change of scenery, but I also use LMDE Cinnamon on another computer, I do like Cinnamon a lot, so I'll give KDE a while then probably go to LMDE Cinnamon to save bothering with re-installs in future.

Sorry for the delay in my response. I've been slammed with stuff to do. So I'll try to catch up with your responses now.

I found the setting for "minimizing windows" by following your directions. But I don't see anything for unminimizing the windows. What should the defaults be?

As far as your KDE question, I absolutely love KDE. Sometimes I run into small quirks that annoy me, but nothing too major that detracts from it.

That makes sense, but where did you edit the startup applications?

If I am looking at it right, it appears I have 1.6.7+nadia. As far as KDE, KDE is my main. I am just looking around outside of KDE to see how other environments are these days. KDE has some killer features though that Cinnamon doesn't seem to have but I'm impressed this far. Not sure if I'll switch away from KDE on my main machine but who knows.

Mint KDE is amazing. I'm not sure why it doesn't get more recognition.

Another question is that I notice that I have "Cinnamon Settings" and "System Settings." Shouldn't these be consolidated? I'm not sure why there are two control panels...

I think for Cinnamon the default is Menu > Preferences > Startup Applications
