Change your apt sources to wheezy and get yourself a new homemade UP made of stable software :D

Great news for debian stable users, bad news for Gnome 2 users (nevertheless they will keep using old stable for another year). In my case I have been using wheezy for the last ten months and I am really happy with it, so for the time being I will not move to Jessie (next three - four months are going to be really hard / fun for testing users... BTW: A message for all testing/sid users: Good luck!!... you are going to need it   )

I guess we won't have a new UP until july / august.

Not exactly. Have been using testing+sid+experimental mix since many years. Whatever new I see in unstable/experimental, I have been installing and using them without any problems. So, it is not a problem really.

Of course, YMMV.

I installed this last night, and spent the morning getting things configured and tweaked to the way I'm used to on the system. I was just talking to someone earlier in the day about how it was rumored/reported that Wheezy might be released this weekend.

Thanks, zerozero for the thread! I might not have noticed this for a few days otherwise.

Also, I love the Keep Calm and Install Wheezy image, mockturtl - LOL.

Why do experts use Debian or LMDE

You'll need it to get Mint packages, but it won't be frozen -- it will evolve with jessie. If you want a stable Wheezy + Mint, get word to Clem & the gang. They can certainly cut a stable spin/mirror, but if there's little demand, it may be low priority.

You'll definitely want security.debian.org, and possibly others:

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy-proposed-updates main contrib non-free
deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian wheezy-backports main contrib non-free
deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import #incoming romeo

Debian 7.0 "Wheezy" finally come out

Post by The Dark Side »

Fortunately, the new version of Debian is now available for download. I've already tried and it really works great, I think its better than its previous version. Debian is a rock, is very solid, I have not tried the Gnome version, but I've tried the version with KDE desktop, XFCE desktop and LXDE desktop. The three are Excellent !!!!

The only "bad" (if you call it that) of Debian, is that program versions are rather old, but they are truly stable. The desktop brings in the KDE edition is KDE 4.8.4, the desktop brings in the XFCE edition is XFCE 4.8. They are not the latest versions, but it really works well. Anyway, at this point, I think nobody in the Linux world, can argue that this is one of the best distributions of this world. Debian is solid, a rock and is absolutely fantastic. Greetings.

Testing tends to be hectic and risky the weeks just after the release of stable, and, this time the freezing has been really long so next weeks are gonna be really fun for testing users: Testing/sid users are going to move from kernel 3.2 to 3.8, from GNOME 3.2 to 3.8, libreoffice from 3.5 to 4, xorg from 1.12 to 1.14... in just a few weeks.

An example: On Saturday there were just 6 critical bugs in testing, today there are 176 bugs....and rising

A package needs some time and testing since it is created til is accepted in Debian stable: First the new package is included in experimental, then moves to sid and then to testing. At these stages, the package can not be used by people using Debian stable

Later the package might go to backports so people using stable might use recent versions of their favourite packages (in fact backports is a group of packages taken from testing recompiled to be used in stable).

The proposed-updates is the next step, and it is similar to the incoming repo in LMDE: These packages are bug-free and are pretty safe, but the Debian team want to test them a bit more before upload that package to stable

Wheezy-updates are new versions of packages (generally those versions just fix known bugs that don't involve security). Wheezy/updates ( are new versions that fix bugs that might affect the security of your system). These two kind of updates should be installed by all users

I used Wheezy a year ago when it was still testing. It was nice for what it was. I'm extremely surprised about the error with Gnome 3 though. I've never had an issue with Debian stable not working. Now Sid on the other hand...

All the Debian live CDs booted up fine for me. Been using Wheezy on the desktop since last summer, and recently installed it again on a netbook. A very solid release. Shared a few thoughts about it on my blog:
http://kbd-thinkingoutloud.blogspot.com ... -here.html
I will add that Mint Debian is much easier and quicker to install.
