Are you running the Gnome version or the KDE version?
Also, are you using a separate /boot partition?

Alt+F2 - write gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst - enter your password and in the file that appears comment out gfxmenu=/etc/grub/message.mint by entering ## in front of it. Save and exit. Reboot to see if it worked, which it should.
If this is kde use kate instead of gedit or in the xfce version replace gedit with mousepad.
