Configuration of mplayer is needed and is described in a sticky, but I'll save you the trouble to find it as it's really simple
Video output X11 and audio output alsa (unless you actually use oss)
"Some quicktime files" seems to be a problem - sorry I have no answer

http://www.apple.com/trailers/independe ... s/trailer/

when I try to open this in FF 2.0.0.14 it says: "(no video)"
lookin for embedded items shows me this: http://movies.apple.com/movies/independ ... -h.ref.mov
and after a copy into the addressbar it works, but sized to complete screenresolution (many artifacts). What's wrong here (with my config)?

Yeah the *.mov link is working pretty good, but the embedded trailer doesn't work ... so what's wrong in my config :)

Yeah both played fine.

Could you check mplayer/preferences/video see thats it's using X11 rather than the others.

Ok, i was pretty sure I did everything right ...

but ... i forgot to disable vlc-mozilla plugin which tried to open the *.mov files

=> now it works for me, too.
