LiveCD Update - Cinnamon broken

Post by Tim-int »

I tried to make an updated linuxmint-13-cinnamon-dvd-32bit.iso, using Ubuntu Builder from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-builder/ on Ubuntu Raring 13.04. Customizing Mint should be supported because it says "..you can customize, for example, Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu)..". I used apt-get dist-upgrade.
First problem was that I got logion screen (which shouldn't be the case with LiveCD). But, using "mint" with no password I was able to log in.
Mint 13 ISO built like that boots fine, but Cinnamon is broken (it's like Gnome without status bar with Log off). I tried both with keeping configuration files and replacing with the new version.
I was thinking of adding new Cinnamon from ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-stable, but there is no package Cinnamon there for Maya/Precise. OK, Cinnamon 1.8. will be backported to Maya, but is it a solution?
What's the problem?

Re: LiveCD Update - Cinnamon broken

Relating to my question, I used UCK before, but Ubuntu Builder gives more control, so I tried it. It's interesting that Update Manager uses upgrade, not dist-upgrade. Anyway, the result is the same with both. I had the same result also with Customizer, so I concluded that the problem is with Cinnamon. Is there something we as users need to do during the procedure, or there must be something changed in the program?

There are other topics on remastering. There is some topic which might be similar to this problem http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=110856, and it says
I'm attempting to remaster a live cd, and have been successful in everything except the Cinnamon Desktop.
and the reply was
I just happen to do the exact same thing, except I was using the "mate" edition. I asked a question on another forum, then answered myself after I figured it out. Essantially, install mintconstructor from the repo's.
.
They mostly point to mintconstructor, starting from tutorial "How to remaster/respin Linux Mint ISO images" http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/918 to topics such as: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=110763.
But, with the new Mint 15 Olivia , there's no Mintconstructor available. Is it obsolete now?
Anyway, like in http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=60661 I couldn't get it to work, after I installed it in Olivia form Nadia repository. There are just errors "Failed to read file /root/root//...." and at the end I can see only "iso_name" file in "/root" folder (the same if placed in Home folder).

Some point to remastersys, such as http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=74505&p=438978 or http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=56996 or http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=74675.
But, http://www.remastersys.com/ says "after all the bullshit some folks created for me I have decided to stop development of remastersys and it will no longer be available". It points to a fork at http://system-imaging.blogspot.com/.

There is APTonCD in Mint Olivia and it looks to me like some supplemental CD source, so that we can use our original Mint ISO + APTonCD created ISO. Apart from 2 ISOs, this still means we have to install all the new packages from this CD.

I install mint 15, upgrade it, tweak it however I want it, then use my makelive script to create a live iso image from it...
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=213&t=134792

My makelive script is basically the same method used by refracta-snapshot which you might want to take a look at, which is also in use by antix for antix-snapshot as well. Others have used the method on various other distros too...

I made another test, this time to make an updated linuxmint-15-cinnamon-dvd-64bit.iso , using Ubuntu Builder on Linux Mint 15 64-bit. This time, the result was better.
Still, I get login screen. But, Cinnamon is fine. This may have to do with Mint or Cinnamon version (I don't think the reason is a platform, it's chroot-ed). I may now for sure when new Cinnamon is backported to Mint 13 LTS.
