Linux Mint 15 Laptop Wifi Keeps Disconnecting

Post by rafeeq123 »

Hello i am new to this forum and also with using Linux. I am a basic user of Linux so i still have a lot to learn.

I have an Acer Aspire V3-551 laptop with brand new install of Linux Mint 15 64 bit installed besides Windows 7 64 bit.

The problem happens when i just rely on the wifi connection on its own and i cannot connect to the internet.
I can connect through the wireless for about 5 minutes before it disconnects and stays disconnected then i have to restart the system and the same thing repeats itself.

I can connect to the internet through my laptop when i plug an ethernet cable into it which is connected directly into my ADSL unit.

My Laptop specs are as follows:

Processor - AMD Quad core processor A8-4500M with turbo core technology upto 2.80 GHz
Graphics Card - AMD Radeon HD 7640G with 512 MB of Graphics system memory

Wireless network Adapter - Atheros AR5BWB222 Wireless Network Adapter OR A Atheros ar9462 wireless adapter

My wireless drivers are all installed and picked up by linux mint.

My system is also upto date so there is nothing more for me to install.

Here is what happens when i use the mintwifi command:

mintwifi

Humm,
Power Management:on
I have seen this before. Turn it off and see if it stabilizes the connection.

Also, post:
lsmod

It may be a conflicting driver.

How do i turn Power Management off?

Here is the output and i have turned power management off

rafeeq@rafeeq-Aspire-V3-551 ~ $ iwconfig

lo no wireless extensions.

The wireless works flawlessly in windows 7 with no problems but in linux mint 15 cinnamon it is still very unstable and not working properly even after turning power management off.

I see several modules that relate to your wireless device in your lsmod. They may or may not be the source of your problem by way of conflict. I'm guessing that acer_wmi was installed by way of ndiswrapper. Sometimes blacklisting acer_wmi fixes the problem. Reboot afterwards. (You can always remove the blacklist line item to return to your previuos state.)

If you did use ndiswrapper to install your driver, was this because the driver provided in "Driver Manager" did not work?

Also
Your ifconfig below is not showing your wireless adaptor. Perhaps this is becase the WIFI had already crashed when you ran the test. Run ifconfig when you wireless is working, then run it again after it has crashed. While crashed, run
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
If it comes up again we have another driver-problem clue.
If it gives an error, it may be becasue of a block.

A few other questions:
When your wireless disconects, does network manager still show it as connected ?

Does
sudo lspci -vmm
provide a "driver" line for the device?

Hi i have blacklisted the acer_wmi modules and restarted my machine.

I cannot connect to the internet now wirelessly because it wont allow me to turn the wireless on through network settings so i have connected to the internet through ethernet cable. The wireless just stays in the off position no matter how many times u press it.

I did install ndiswrapper as i thought it would automatically fix my wireless problem but i have now uninstalled that.

I have not used driver manager.

In driver manager it says Advanced micro devices [AMD] nee ati: trinity [radeon hd 7640g]
This device is using the recommended driver

xserver-xorg-video-ati (recommended)
Version 1:7.1.0.0-0ubuntu2
x.org x server -- AMD/ATI display driver wrapper

It also mentions no proprietary drivers are in use.

Here is ifconfig with ethernet cable

When i disconnect my ethernet cable and wireless is not on and i use - sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

I get the result below

rafeeq@rafeeq-Aspire-V3-551 ~ $ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
[sudo] password for rafeeq:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill

When the wireless was on it just said connecting to wireless network and would just remain in that state.

Sometimes it says disconnected and tries to connect to BT wifi fon which is another network. My network provider is BT - british telecom

My connection is BThub3-42xm

Here is what happens when i type sudo lspci -vmm with ethernet cable not wireless

The bugs with thius wireless: report..
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1040943
--hardware/software

And you might also want to include in your network setup an alternate dns service, such as opendns
http://www.rawcomputing.co.uk/linux/linuxtips24.html
--if the nic(Network Interface Card) isn't killing the connection all by itself..

What about the windows OS, was it OK..
I don't think you indicated that your windows OS was OK with that connection
--no dropping ?

Re: Linux Mint 15 Laptop Wifi Keeps Disconnecting

Post by rafeeq123 »

In my previous post as shown below i mentioned that windows 7 has no wifi problems at all and is extremely stable. There is no dropping or loss of connection in windows 7.
Linux Mint 15 cinnamon has been my only problem connecting to wifi.
The wireless works flawlessly in windows 7 with no problems but in linux mint 15 cinnamon it is still very unstable and not working properly even after turning power management off.
Thank you for the bug report and fix links. Much appreciated :)

Re: Linux Mint 15 Laptop Wifi Keeps Disconnecting

Tried this solution :

Open terminal and enter the following command:

sudo -s gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf

at the end of the file add this:

options ath9k nohwcrypt=1

Save an restart your OS.

from the bug report you sent me:

The bugs with thius wireless: report..
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1040943
--hardware/software

The other change i made was in my network settings so it didnt try to connect to other networks it picked up.

I made it forget the connection of 10 other connections so it only focussed on connecting to my adsl incase there were any connection clashes or confusions. As it did occasionally try to connect to local wifi hot spots when it couldnt connect to my adsl.

Still having problems with my wireless disconnecting. Sorry to say

Sorry to bump this few day old post.

There is a patch for this issue on ath9k devices. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=49201
I believe it is confirmed working.

I found it on this page http://www.linlap.com/asus_transformer_book_tx300?&#comment_9825c14d598cb1cfdbbb330105ea53d8

The only thing is I am a bit nubbish when it comes to kernels. Despite looking it up and giving my best attempt, I was not able to successfully apply the patch. I don't think it should matter that all the references are to ubuntu because we use the same kernel ? (again, I am a noob with this low level stuff)

If anyone can share experience with how to apply something like this that would be swell.. or even if its possible to just compile a kernel with the patch and distribute it?

EDIT: for clarification, the patch is in comment #135 in the bugzilla link. Here is a link directly to the patch https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/2718041/

Thanks,
Mike

Mike open up 'synaptic package manager. In the search box type in kernel. It should list the latest stable kernel. If that is installed than you can eliminate that as a problem if it isn't the latest installed under the list of kernels, mark it for installation, apply the install by clicking the arrow, that is bent, after it installs do a reboot. Your problem very well could be from the kernel.

Hope this helps a bit but if it don't it will at least eliminate it as one of your problems. You can always type in 'uname -r' in the terminal to find out what version of the kernel you are booted into.

John

Thanks for the response

Pardon my ignorance, but this fix was created not 10-13 days ago. Would it already be merged with the latest kernel ?

I will give it a go either way.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I have the latest Mint 15, cinnamon 64. It appears the latest kernel is installed.. er at least, no updates in the package manager. So basically I will either have to wait for ath9k patch to be applied to the kernel or figure it out for myself.. which may be doable now that I realized I can grab the source and headers from the package manager (derp).

Thanks,
Mike

Hello! I have the same issue that is posted above. I also have the exact same laptop. For me i have to turn off my WIFI and turn it back on in order to connect after it drops out. I have been using this laptop with Win 7 for more that 6 months and I wanted to go back to a Linux Distro. Im not a fan of Ubuntu after the Unity change. So this looked to be a great chance to try something new. Im also running Linux Mint 15 64 bit Cinnamon. I hope this can be resolved soon as it is quite imparative that I have Internet connection to use my laptop. I really don't want to go back to Windows. This is such a nice Distro, Im very impressed!

I don't really know exactly how I got mine working stable so far (over an hour staying connected) but the last thing I did that seems to have fixed it is :

Code: Select all

$ sudo modprobe -r ath9k
$ sudo modprobe ath9k btcoex_enable=1
I didn't know how to check if it was enabled beforehand but you can run this to check :

Code: Select all

$ grep -R [0-9a-zA-Z] /sys/module/ath9k/parameters/
my output after the change was

Code: Select all

/sys/module/ath9k/parameters/enable_diversity:0
/sys/module/ath9k/parameters/blink:0
/sys/module/ath9k/parameters/nohwcrypt:0
/sys/module/ath9k/parameters/btcoex_enable:1
I also have the backports ath9k driver installed from https://backports.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Main_Page. I don't know if this is needed or not. All I had to do to install that was untar and run :

Code: Select all

$ make defconfig-ath9k
$ make -j4
$ sudo make install
$ sudo modprobe -r ath9k
$ sudo modprobe ath9k btcoex_enable=1

That's the version i was using too. It also seems like blacklisting the acer-wmi module helped me a lot too. Without that my wireless still disconnected and I'd lose my bluetooth mouse on any sign of sleep. Just did a 3 hour session with no disconnects, wireless or bluetooth, and my monitor had dropped to sleep at least twice.
