Hi,
The other day I bought a new multi-function printer/scanner. It is a Brother DCP-J525W with wireless connection.
I got it connected to my wireless and I am able to print and scan from the windows 7 laptop, -even if it took me some time and several installs, removals and installs again.
However on my Linux mint 14 (64 bit, cinnamon) I cannot get it to work. At one point I got cups set up and I could actually print, but as scanning did not work I decided to remove it all and reinstall and now I cannot print or scan
Brother has lots of drivers and stuff on their website (http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... index.html), but I am afraid I do not know the difference between CUPS and LPR, which one I need or if I need both.
Error message when I try to print:
In cups it says "stopped"
and when I try to scan:
No scanners detected
Could somebody possibly give me a hand?

Re: brother wireless multi-function printer
According to my information, you need two (2) packages from the Brother website: the lpr driver and the cupswrapper which ties the driver into the Common Unix Printer System (CUPS).
These files should be in a .deb form appropriate for your Mint installation (32-bit or 64-bit), which you can then double click on the downloaded files ( lpr file first, then the cupswrapper file) to install them under Mint.
I can't guarantee that scanning will work under Linux for that printer. It depends on what Brother included in its driver.

Thank you
I got printing back again I followed this guide here http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=103900
supposedly Brother does have scan drivers for my printer and I have downloaded and installed them according to this page:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... ml#brscan4
The installs runs with no errors, however I still cannot see my printer when I open Simple Scan.

Re: brother wireless multi-function printer
Ok, so I have checked that
/usr/lib/sane and /usr/lib64/sane both have the files: libsane-brother4.so, libsane-brother4.so.1 and libsane-brother4.so.1.0.7 as indicated here: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... tml#f00101, so that should be ok.
Now I want to run the command:
as indicated here under step 5 http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bs ... scn1b.html but then I get "invalid parameter 0"
I am at my wits end

Re: brother wireless multi-function printer
Did you ever get the scan feature to work wirelessly? If so how. I have the same problem you have. About to throw away the printer (brand new)!

have a read at the post by detonate
you have to plod through a series of steps

............ most advise one needs to start with the device connected by USB:
......... wireless connections are slowly getting more simple; eg the latest Canon printer, the ip7200 series
but the WPS system isn't on the Brother printers yet, I don't think

http://www.trustedreviews.com/canon-pixma-ip7250_Printer_reviewand the WPS setup on this machine is very quick; press a button on the front panel and the button on your router and it's all done in a few seconds.

Re: brother wireless multi-function printer
And that push-button WPS synchronization thing? It only works on certain routers, and that very same 'feature' has been demonstrated as a hole in the security for the router whereby a 'black hat' can subvert the router because it has a fixed username and password with administrative access to the router.
Don't expect it to be implemented until they get the bugs out of the process.

Sorry I did not see your post before, but yes I got it working after upgrading to Mint 15.
On this version I had no issues installing the printer
