How Do You Pronounce Linux?
So the wife and I had a roundy-round the other night about how you pronounce Linux.
I have always called it (Lie-Nux) which she says.. if you say that in public, you will sound like you dont know what you are talking about..
Her version is (Leh-Nix)
I dont really care about which of us is correct.. just trying to not call it by the wrong name..
So.. community.. how do *you* say Linux?

Re: How Do You Pronounce Linux?
There's an older audio-only clip accessible here (or as a direct download of a .wav file here). The pronunciation is slightly different in that one -- but Linus's accent (speaking English) is also much more pronounced.
Re: How Do You Pronounce Linux?
I have always pronounced (and will continue to pronounce) it "Linix"
Re: How Do You Pronounce Linux?
It's pronounced "Linux". Sorry, couldn't resist it.
It's a short "i" and rhymes with sin, bin, din, etc. Why anyone would say "Lie-nux" is a mystery.

Re: How Do You Pronounce Linux?
I think we can all agree on the 2nd part....the X....it's just really a question of the first part...is it pronounced Lin x or Len x????
I hear it pronounced mostly in those two ways...

Re: How Do You Pronounce Linux?
Linus T. himself pronounces it Linux not Lienux, which is good enough for me.SC23 wrote:I think that roots in Linus which I think *is* pronounced with the long "i" as in "like"iironjade wrote:It's pronounced "Linux". Sorry, couldn't resist it.

The origin some from, unix, minix, and all other *nix or postix type operating systems.
The standard accepted way to pronouce the word phonetically,
Lihn-Ex
Others say:
Line-Ex
Please accept they are both correct, there is a more popular way (Lihn-Ex), and a way which immitates the accept of Linus Travoids pronouces it (Line-Ex).
Think of some other words, we have GIF, which the creator says should be prounced like JIF, but everyone prounces like gift. We also have the example of Jalapeno, Do you pronouce the word using it spanish prounciation, or do to pronouce it like an american word. I bet you pronouce it with a J sounding like an H, but the rest of the word with english vowel sounds.

Re: How Do You Pronounce Linux?
Since people started spelling it Unix. Since Linux is based off unix, we tend to prounce it similear. I wrote Ex since it makes a phonetic sound matching better than Uhhhhx. Again, remeber the abbreviation is *nix.iironjade wrote: Why would "ux" ever be pronounced "ex"?
