I actually just figured out that Synaptic had all the same updates. Once that was done, mintUpdate was happy too. So now I'm not really clear about what purpose mintUpdate serves, but at least I'm happy.
This is exactly the kind of thing that confuses noobs and then seems so simple afterwards!

mintUpdate does more than Synaptic (and less) and is safer
Synaptic is a tool to install any kind of package while mintUpdate only handles updates
Please use mintUpdate for updates - there's less risk that you screw up your system due to the categorization in mintUpdate
