when my system is inactive for 10 or so minutes, the system suspends itself and i have to enter my password to reenter the system.
can i disable this suspension to avoid having to frequently enter my pasword ?

You can do better actually!
On XFCE, you can use Applications Menu -> Settings -> Screensaver and just UNcheck the "Lock screen after" checkbox at the bottom.
Your screensaver will still be active (a lot more for you to customize, if you want), blanking the screen, but no password will be asked when it wakes up.
If you're using MATE, Cinnamon or whatever else, you can easilly find a similar option on the Screensaver settings for that desktop environment.
