How To Install and Use get_iplayer

Post by Oscar799 »

Streaming from the BBC iPlayer site tends to be trouble-free.
But the downloading option sometimes misbehaves.
One way round this is to use get-iplayer

In terminal type:-

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get install get-iplayer
Then to use it:
Find the show you want on the iPlayer site and copy the URL,then,in terminal type:-

Code: Select all

 get_iplayer --pid
Allow one letter space at the end then paste the URL you copied.
This will download the show
You can watch your show with VLC or Movie Player

That is a very useful tip Oscar.
A year or so ago I spent ages wrestling with bbc iplayer desktop and I never did get it to work right. I gave up after I realised that the only time I would ever want to download TV to my computer I never had the bandwidth to do it anyway

Hi all,

I’m a bit late to the party here, but I just wanted to say I have written a complete beginners guide to get_iplayer. It comes complete with installation guides for Mac, Windows and Linux (I've used Ubuntu bit it'll work for Mint), plus many many examples of commands to copy and paste, from simple downloads of one programme to setting up the PVR for multiple recordings.

Hopefully it’ll help some people looking to get started with get_iplayer. The guide is here if anyone needs a complete walkthrough or getting started guide:

Josh

PS – No ads on my site or anything like that, I just love get_iplayer and wanted to help others use it!

I've just followed Oscar 799's instructions to install "get_iplayer", and have started it downloading the film I missed on BBC2 last night!
It all seems to be happening! :D
Terminal is clocking up the kb's and so far it's about 20% done!

Just one question, assuming it all goes to plan, can I create a file that I could play on my Samsung Galaxy S3?
You see I have a massive acreage of Ext SD Card available (64GB) that I'm a bit miffed about being unable to shift Apps to, in order to leave the phone's primary memory uncluttered.

Hmm... nothing's simple is it? There was a message saying "error reading header at 40 odd percent"...or words to that effect but it carried on downloading and at the end there was loads of lines of "progress" indicated in percent, finishing with:-
"Progress: ===========================================================================>100%|
Finished writing to temp file."
I have no idea what to do now!
or where Temp File can be accessed.
HELP!

Sought help from Oscar 799 via pm.
Since I'm not really used to using the Terminal interface, and I couldn't find evidence that "get_iplayer" had installed via the menus, I thought it wasn't installed, so attempted to start again!
Terminal soon put me right!...
"INFO: 1 Matching Programmes
INFO: Perfume - Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (b00qh059) Already in download history (/home/geoff/.get_iplayer/download_history) - use --force to override
geoff@geoffs-desktop ~ $"

I eventually stumbled across it, and wadaya know! it plays!
As this is a .mp4 file, can I just transfer it directly to my galaxy S3 Phone and expect it to play?

I'm hoping to build a little library of films that I can squirrel away on my phone so that when I'm at my holiday apartment, I can use an MHL lead to view them on the TV there.

Well! that was most successfull!
Thanks to Oscar 799's help I find that the terminal interface seems to be all I will need!
I have transferred the resulting files to my Vista PC which has Serviio DLNA software on it, so that I can see how it looks on my big screen Sony Bravia, and I think that the quality is just perfect!
The odd thing I have noticed is that the thumbnails for each of four films I have downloaded using "get_iplayer" are all for an Australian film called "Let's get Skase" .........how odd!
Can anyone shed any light? :?
I have never heard of this film before and have no idea what has generated the thumbnail!
Pleased to say it has no effect on the performance of the file.

Just fully migrated from Ubuntu (12.04) to LMDE and had difficulty getting get_iplayer downloading.

Information from the website, above, got get_iplayer downloading on LMDE in less than 5 minutes. Ta for the great, current information! :D
