using XFCE cassandra
right i am working on an ancient machine... P3 667 with 768RAM

Xorg will absolutely make my comp unusable if i plug in a usb pen drive. 100%... thats gotta be a joke.

googling about xorg hogging cpu has lead me to find that its usually a video card driver issue... with the recommended fix of using vesa. How do i do this?

also running Mepis 7 (KDE) on an equally ancient laptop p3 800, 384ram... and xorg never ever takes that much CPU.

any hint on how to address this would be appreciated.

Look in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and see what is in the "Device" section under "Driver". You can change it to vesa by editing your xorg.conf file.

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
The only downside is if you have a special screen resolution, vesa may not support it because it is a generic graphics driver.
