[SOLVED]Linux Mint 15 does not detect my USB hard drive.

Post by Kallisti »

Hello,

I'm brand-new to Linux after replacing a dying Windows machine, but I have a major problem--Mint won't recognize the external USB hard drive that has all of my data on it.

Fdisk -l doesn't turn up the external drive at all, just the internal hard drive.

I *can* use other USB items--a USB thumb-drive was detected, for example--so I know the USB port is working.

I know the external hard drive itself is functional because it works fine on other machines, but I have no idea how to get it working on this one.

What I've tried so far:
--Rebooting
--Running Update Manager and getting everything up to date
--Rebooting again
--Fdisk -l

Kallisti,

Unplug the external drive. Open the terminal and enter sudo -i then udevadm monitor --udev

If the external drive is self powered plug it in then plug it into the usb port, This should trigger output from udevadm monitor. Paste back the output. Press ctl-c to terminate udevadm.

It doesn't appear to be triggering anything--after I plug the drive back in, the terminal is just sitting there. There's a little white block in the bottom left corner blinking, but otherwise it appears to be completely static.

Kallisti,

What's the manufacturer :?: Is it in an enclosure :?: Does anything else work in that port :?:

I have a couple of year old wd mybook 2tb for backups. I've also recovered data from neighbors/friends drives using a usb adapter with no problems.

Sony. It's not in an enclosure, and my flash drive works in that port.

I'm getting a little worried that there might be damage to the drive--somehow--after all; I'm going to check it again on another machine in an hour or two, and make absolutely certain it is in fact working.

EDIT: It was working fine yesterday, but after testing it on the Windows machine in the other room and getting nada I'm thinking the problem is with the drive itself.

Try placing it in a freezer bag with rice and stick it in the freezer for a 24 hours. It can't hurt anything at this point.

May as well give it a try.

Having the same problem here. I'm pretty sure the drive is ok, I backed it up on Ubuntu just before installing Mint. The drive itself has Windows 7 installed, and is from my laptop. I've tried the udevadm line, and got nothing too. Drive model Hitachi HTS545050B9A300. Apreciate any help.

Hello Kallisti,

I am facing a similar problem when attaching an external drive which has some data on it. Mint 15 doesn't displays it in the tab. I tried the "udevadm monitor --udev". It would be great if you could shed some light on this. Thanks!

I can't explain why it's intermittent, but eventually in this case

UDEV [1856.728773] add /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb2/2-3/2-3:1.0/host12/target12:0:0/12:0:0:0/block/sdc/sdc1 (block)

the device can be accessed on /dev/sdc1 so it might auto-mount or it might have to be manually mounted.
