[Olivia] No sound via HDMI

Post by marmistrz »

Hi,

I tried to connect a Samsung Smart TV to Mint 15 via HDMI. I have a nvidia gts250 graphics card. B8t

Code: Select all

aplay -l
**** Lista PLAYBACK urządzeń ****
karta 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], urządzenie 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog]
  Urządzenia podrzędne: 1/1
  Urządzenie podrzędne #0: subdevice #0
karta 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], urządzenie 1: VT1708S Digital [VT1708S Digital]
  Urządzenia podrzędne: 1/1
  Urządzenie podrzędne #0: subdevice #0
karta 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], urządzenie 2: VT1708S Alt Analog [VT1708S Alt Analog]
  Urządzenia podrzędne: 1/1
  Urządzenie podrzędne #0: subdevice #0
In the sound preferences there's no HDMI output available. Using nvidia-313-updates driver, proprietary.

Why is it happening?

What is your sound output device set to? If you are running the Cinnamon version click on the sound icon on the panel, and select output device. You should see a couple of choices. Back in the old days I used to install gnome-alsamixer, run it, and enable IEC958 to get to get pass through audio. That may still work on the MATE edition, but not Cinnamon.

I'm using MATE. I tried using the Sound Preferences applet and setting output to IEC958 before, but it didn't work. gnome-alsamixer segfaults with

I have the same strange issue in Olivia 15,
I installed it today.

When I connect to an hdmi monitor with incorporated audio I can't see the hdmi sound output in Cinnamon audio setting.
Also if I kill pulseaudio and I choose from the application I want to use (example: smplayer) using the alsa(0,3) which is my hdmi audio port, it doesn't work.

Someone had this issue and solved? Or knows why that happen? Mint recognized my laptop as an Inspiron n5050, and it is, but I was saying my friends "with a distribution like this everything work", and my credibility fell instantly :?

Thank you so much AlbertP, it seems that that can solve the problem. :)
For future consulting and nightstalkers in need of help I paste the portion of solution here from [url]http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_olivia.php[/url]
If your HDMI Sound output does not work out of the box, you can try the following solution:

In a terminal, type the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily
apt update
apt install oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms

For me this didn't solve, already tried this before. I read somewhere that it might be a kernel-related bug that the audio output isn't detected ("hdmi audio") and kernel 3.8.8 could solve, but didn't try it yet.

Yes it seems.. too many annoying kernel bugs in this period.
Here's the link of the issue in the ubuntu launchpad https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1169984

As an FYI, some video cards with HDMI ports require an S/PDIF 2-pin cable to transfer the sound from the sound card/motherboard(if integrated) to the video card. I know from speaking with Nvidia that all the GeForce 9 series cards with HDMI, I have a GeForce 9500GT, require this Don't know about any others.

Might be a totally unrelated situation and you may have had sound before with a different OS. I'm just throwing it out there as a possible oversight and solution as that was my problem. I had sound, but not through the HDMI port. I got the card used so had to track down info on it to even know for sure what I had.

As far as I know, NVIDIA GeForce 8 and 9 series require that, later cards usually not (older cards don't have HDMI).

But if your card requires it, it's also required on Windows, which means that Windows won't have HDMI sound either if the cable is missing.

It's gts 250 (or similar). Not the old 8xxx or 9xxx.

Hi marmistrz!

I just registered here because I had the same problem and also none of solutions mentioned in this thread worked for me. But finally I solved it!

this did not work for me either:

**************************************************************************
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/alsa-daily
apt update
apt install oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms
**************************************************************************

but this package did:

https://code.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-audi ... .1_all.deb

hope it will solve your problem!

good luck
