CLI Guide

Did a quick search and it didn't turn anything up so ....

Can someone recommend a good guide to the Linux CLI. I've been tooling around with linux since Dapper Drake (breifly), then Hardy, then Lucid, then well..... then switching over to Mint. At this point i know enough to know the only way i'm going to get a better handle on Mint/Ubuntu/Debian style distros is to learn the CLI. At least then maybe i will be able to make sense of the some of the fine help the Gurus around here make available.

So a good resource with all the commands and syntax rules with lots and lots and lots of examples (preferably) with detailed explanations, would be greatly appreciated. Also, if the commands (and/or syntax) available vary from distro to distro a resource addressing the variations would be most helpful as well.

Anyone know of such an online resource(s)?

Easy to read and follow for beginners and will make comfortable using the command line.

Oh my. I've only just skimmed the TOC and began reading the first chapter and already it's answered a question i've had for a while now: the dang difference between "$" and "#". Now i know. (Am feeling much smarter too LOL).

Sorry for late reply - been reading that book (plus some non-puter related problems) and it has kept me busy. It is an excellent resource for the noob. Keeps things very basic and simple with lots and lots of examples. Perfect! Not a lot has gelled yet but at least now when i look at commands they make partial sense to me. And i've found myself using some of them regularly - man, --help and --help-all, and directory navigation commands (had to UN-learn the old dos syntax though). I'm particularly fascinated by "alias" and "ln -s". I understand the concepts, but, "|", "<", and ">" still have me a wee bit confused as regards their placement in the command line depending on what other commands you are using them with and what you are trying to accomplish.

But i'm sure it will all come together eventually. They were just starting to when i got sidetracked with a couple of wine issues (the application not the beverage).

Anyway, thank you for this excellent resource.
