Linux Mint Brainstorm

Postby LostOverThere on Sun Apr 13, 2008 9:19 pm

As I've said, I think we should have a Linux Mint Brainstorm like Ubuntu has. Brainstorm is open source and the source code is available on Launchpad.

This could be a great community project as well.

Because Mint has a forum rather than a mailing list it means anyone can start a thread requesting a new feature and anyone else can weigh in their opinions. Sure you dont get to see your idea has X number of votes, but its really not needed. Ironically this thread you have started therefore proves there is no need for brainstorm. You have suggested a new feature and now people are weighing up its pros and cons.

If everything about Mint was done on mailing lists then yes we could make use of a brain storm like site, but thankfully we don't have to put up crappy mailing lists.

That is partially true, but Brainstorm offers a number of features the forum can't provide
a. It quantifies the suggested solutions to each idea, bringing to light the best solutions which make it easier for developers
b. It displays the most popular ideas, something which this forum cannot do
c. It graphically organizes solutions to the ideas, which this forum cannot do
d. It quicky connects "brainstormers" with developers, wherein people who have ideas can have developers look at the ideas and determine plauseability, functionality, etc.

These forums do an excellent job serving the Linux Mint community, but I have experience with Ubuntu Brainstorm and it has been nothing but positive for that distribution.

Hi all,

this thread has now been read by 1148 people and only four people consider the idea worth replying to. That should tell you everything you need to know as to whether the forum thinks it is necessary or not.

I think brainstorm page is also better because you can just browse it, see what suggestions people have and participate in evolution of distro (how it will look), bring your own idea is only one thing, forum is enough for it, but does not provide other possibilities. Maybe someone (I hope I am not alone) wants to see and be part of this evolution and does not want to search for every single idea on forum (mainly search for idea he had not had... :D so did not know about it)

Example:
viewtopic.php?f=29&t=13972&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
- answering (well, saying opinions) is much more difficult than if there is some brainstorm page, because that post is not about 1 idea, but 19... Then could be problem for developers to find those ideas and finally what they should think about them if most of the people will not reply anyway...

...I also disagree with mailing list, but brainstorm page does not necessarily have to have it...

Otherwise I agree with ID trot2millah 8)

The engine used by Ubuntu is IdeaTorrent, would be great a mint brainstorm.

I think it might interesting to try at least. The page could save time for the developers as they can refer to it quickly. It might waste time setting it up though.

But I have to say, administrators have always been very quick to respond, and ideas are implemented quickly if deemed relevant.

On the same subject (or am I dithering?), it would be nice to have a way of thanking people who help us on the forum, with a bean system like on the Ubuntu forum. It could be a Mint leaf or something like that.

Good points. It seems like it would be a nightmare to quantify requests and votes from a forum.
