[SOLVED]3.2.0-4-686-pae Kernel breaks Virtualbox
Hello, I'm having a problem with Virtualbox that I believe is related to the version of the kernel that I am now running. When I was running the non-pae version of the kernel I didn't have any problems running virtualbox. With the pae kernel, whenever I try to start a virtual machine error message boxes are produced and the virtual machine doesn't start. I follow the instructions that the error message provides but running "/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" does nothing. If anyone would be willing to help me to make the pae kernel friendly to virtualbox I'd greatly appreciate it.

I don't understand: were you previously running a Virtualbox host on a 32bit non-PAE kernel ? How much RAM do you have on the host ?
For a good virtualization support, you should run a 64bit OS (hence a 64bit kernel) on the host.
Did you install the "dkms" package ? Is your userid member of the vboxusers local group ?
"sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" should output something, at least some errors.

Quick question:
From the settings of a VM, System>processor tab, what is the state of the checkbox for Enable PAE/NX.

Re: 3.2.0-4-686-pae Kernel breaks Virtualbox
I've only been running LMDE for a little over a month, before that I was running one of the Ubuntu based editions of Mint. I was initially running the non-PAE kernel because that is what was installed on my system by default when I first installed the system. Once I realized that the OS was not aware of both cores on my system I switched to the pae kernel. I have a 32 bit processor so using a 64 bit OS is not an option for me. I've never had trouble running virtualbox in the past on my system. I have 4 gigs of RAM and I typically allocate 1.5 - 2.0 gb to virtualbox when I need to use it. Odd as it sounds running "sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup" did indeed yield no output of any kind. I just tried installing the dkms package again just in case my earlier attempts of uninstalling and reinstalling virtualbox caused an issue, and below is the output that resulted from the apt-get command:eanfrid wrote:I don't understand: were you previously running a Virtualbox host on a 32bit non-PAE kernel ? You were probably previously running a 32bit 486 kernel, which is only intended for older single-core cpus. With 4GB of RAM and a 686 kernel, either PAE or not does not make a difference.
Did you rather try to install Virtualbox with the all-in-one official package from Oracle (http://www.virtualbox.org), selecting the i386 Debian Wheezy version ?

Re: 3.2.0-4-686-pae Kernel breaks Virtualbox
Running i386 Debian Wheezy package was indeed the answer. At first it didn't install, but after I ran "apt-get install -f" and tried again everything worked just fine, virtualbox now appears to be running the images without a hitch. I was wondering though, if you wouldn't mind elaborating further on what you were saying about the PAE and 686 kernels. I am running a 32-bit core 2 duo system, should I be running a different kernel in your opinion?eanfrid wrote:You were probably previously running a 32bit 486 kernel, which is only intended for older single-core cpus. Despite what you believe, you own a 64bit cpu. If you happened to have more than 4GB on your computer, installing the 64bit version of your system would be a better choice for virtualization purpose. But that would need a complete reinstall.

Re: 3.2.0-4-686-pae Kernel breaks Virtualbox
When I originally bought the system, it had 32 bit Windows Xp installed. I guess because of that I just assumed it was a 32 bit system, but based on the specs for the processor that "inxi -C ", showed my system to have, it is indeed a 64 bit system. I may indeed just go ahead and reinstall with a 64 bit architecture. In general terms, do you think I will indeed experience significant performance improvement if I do? Also below is what inxi showed, and the link to the specs that shows it is indeed a 64 bit processor I'm running.eanfrid wrote:@catweasel:@vontux: as long as you don't tell us the exact model withVontux wrote:core 2 duo systemthe correct answer may varyCode: Select all

Re: [SOLVED]3.2.0-4-686-pae Kernel breaks Virtualbox
As I said above, it is really worth installing a 64bit OS on this platform only if you have more than 4GB of RAM onboard (actually at least 8GB, IMO). If you don't have some spare RAM to add to this computer and go up to a total amount of 8GB, stick with 32bit.
