Mint 12 RC - no sound on Panasonic Toughbook CF52

Post by smiggy »

Hi all,

Just downloaded and installed on Panasonic Toughbook CF-52, no sound.
Had same problem on Fedora 16 and Ubuntu 11.10 too.

Card is an HDA Intel (AD1884).
I can get sound from headphones but speakers are no go.
In sound settings I only have 1 output connector 'headphones'?!

I've amended the alsa-base.conf file and added "options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto/panasonic/laptop/mobile" each in turn to test, all to no avail!
Alsamixer shows no mutes in force either so I'm of the opinion that this just isn't supported across these 3 distro's.
Pity as Mint is my preferred choice and had high hopes that it would install and work but never mind.

Just wondered if anyone else out there knows the 'fix', has a CF-52 with same problem and resolved or can shed any light on what's going on?

:D

UPDATE:

#aplay -l reports:-

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: AD198x Digital [AD198x Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Up to now I have tried the following from the hardware list:

options snd-hda-intel model=xxxxxxx

desktop
laptop
mobile
thinkpad
touchsmart
basic
hp
toshiba
dell_desktop
6stack
3stack
laptop-eapd
laptop-automute
ultra
samsung
samsung-p50
6stack-dig
3stack-dig
auto

Deep joy, nothing yet!
Do I have to index=0, options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=xxxxxx?
Does my output test have to be digital because in analogue only headphones are available and as above aplay -l indicates digital capability?

Anyone, anyone, Bueller, Bueller.......................

UPDATE:

All models relating to AD198x tested:

options snd-hda-intel model=xxxxxxx

desktop
laptop
mobile
thinkpad
touchsmart
basic
hp
toshiba
dell_desktop
6stack
3stack
laptop-eapd
laptop-automute
ultra
samsung
samsung-p50
6stack-dig
3stack-dig
auto

All work via single analogue connector (headphone) output.
No output via speakers at all.
Not sure if adding index=0, into the "options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=xxxxxx" will help, bit loathed to spend another hour/half gedit alsa-base.conf and sudo reboot'ing to be honest!!

So, hardware is supported, but for some reason the speaker output cannot be generated.
Pity as well impressed with Mint in the past and liked the look of this release.
All rest of my military unit carry these ruggedised latops so guess this distro wont be getting the thumbs up/recommendation from me, it pains me to have to go back and recommend we use Windows. :(

Hello I was reading your post and thought I would ask did you try
sudo apt-get install alsa-mixer
run it in terminal arrow over all the way to right and see if you have a [External] out that is on. if so just highlight and hit your m for mute key Esc and see if your sound is working
it worked for me.if so Read my post it may or my not help you .... good luck phantomark

Thanks for posting bud, I'd already tried your solution earlier.
In alsamixer, panning across to the far right I don't have an external.

From left to right:-

Master, Headphone, PCM, Front, Front Mi, Front Mi, CD, Mic, Mic Boost, S/PDIF, S/PDIF D, S/PDIF P, Beep & Mono.
My problem is I dont have speakers as an option as a connector output just headphones, which work great.
That's why I know the sound card has been detected successfully just for some reason speaker output cannot be generated.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply and suggest a solution.

I have installed Linux Mint 15 on a Panasonic toughbook CF-52 i5.

ALL drivers are working. Core temperatures are better than I experienced with Windows 7.
