End of Medibuntu....

According to [url=http://www.unixmen.com/medibuntu-project-comes-end/]this article[/url] and the announcement on Launchpad Medibuntu has come to an end. Does this affect Linux Mint in any way?

No. Linux Mint 15 already dropped Medibuntu as indeed it is no longer needed or useful on Ubuntu based distros.

On earlier Linux Mint releases you aren't affected as you have already installed Linux Mint and no further upgrades will be coming from the Medubuntu repistories. Probably best to open Software Sources and remove all the Medibuntu entries from the Other Software and Authentication tabs. This doesn't affect your installed software, just disables the repository (so you don't take any risks with an abandoned repository; like should the domain somehow end up with new owners, with shady intents).

Once the repository is shut down for real everybody on earlier Linux Mint release will have to do the above anyway, to avoid Update Manager errors.

Can you advise me on something, then?
I'm running Mint 15 and,
mint-meta-codecs(-kde) still depend on two packages that came from medibuntu:
libdvdcss and w64codecs.

I've found that for libdvdcss (which a lot of other packages like brasero also depend upon) I should add the corresponding videolan repository:

But, what about w64codecs package?
If it's really obsolete, shouldn't mint-meta-codecs drop the dependency?
Or if it isn't, maybe the mint repository include it?

I just hate seeing (local or obsolete) packages in my synaptic. I'm OCD like that

Well, the package properties say that they're maintained by the Medibuntu packaging team, but they're not actually coming from the Medibuntu repository, as I have those two packages installed and I've never had medibuntu in my sources. Mint 15 Cinnamon amd64.

I think you want the package libdvdcss2. `apt-cache policy libdvdcss2 w64codecs` command will show you where these packages can be installed from, which is indeed not from any repository but installed from the installation DVD. Packages were built by Medibuntu maintainers. Keeping the repository in Linux Mint isn't useful as the Medibuntu maintainers aren't going to update packages in that repository--ever. I'm not sure what Linux Mint 16 will do. Perhaps include that VideoLAN repository or indeed amend the dependencies.

Anyway, nobody said these packages were obsolete--but Medibuntu is. w64codecs might not actually be needed; `dpkg -L w64codecs` command doesn't show anything exciting. Well, I just performed a fresh install of Mint 15 amd64 on a new machine, and libdvdcss2 and w64codecs are already installed on first boot after installing the OS.

If you're running LMDE.... Yes, then you need that PPA. But i wonder if that PPA can be used for the regular Mint versions based on Ubuntu.

I'm running Mint 15 KDE at this moment giving KDE a new try.
Looking at this i can only say that when the packages are installed, the source will be Medibuntu even when the Medibuntu repo has been removed from the source list.
There must be another source for the w64codecs package......

The source of the packages, as displayed in your output (and mine), is that these packages were installed from the Linux Mint installation DVD and aren't available in any of your repositories. The packages were built by the Medibuntu developers, yes.
