Update Manager errors. Linux Mint 14 KDE

I did a fresh install of Mint today so I'm guessing this problem should be simple enough to fix, but I have not been able to find a solution myself. The problem occurs whenever I open or refresh the update manager it shows me the following error:

So far I have attempted to fix this by switching update servers, and instead recieve the following:
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Am I using the wrong sources? Is there something I need to set up first or change? If so, how would I go about making such changes?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had a problem with this last month. This link provided a solution. At the time, I was using Mint 13 KDE.

I'm still not having any luck. When I run the Select Best Server option, it tells me No Suitable Server was found. My internet connection is sound as far as I can tell. No proxies enabled.

I'm in Virginia and I had no difficulty selecting the University of Maryland as "mirror". Have you tried to select it manually instead of letting the system pick it for you?

By manually, if you mean select it out of the list, then Yes. Still no luck. I'm wondering where this IP 113.193.187.226 comes from. A Google search revealed this: http://www.stopforumspam.com/ipcheck/113.193.187.226
Not very promising. I feel like there might be something more nefarious going on in my system. Thankfully, I'm running on a virtual machine. Any ideas?

I've searched around the forums and found different methods to try. I usually get the error message above or the one below.

Was there ever a solution to this problem?

Both my sources.lst file, and my /var/lib/dpkg/lock file, are empty. They exist, but there is no info there.

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

These are two of the errors at the bottom of my output for "apt-get update". This is shown after a series of "Failed to fetch...404" errors.

I went and made some changes based on the this information:
Local repository and GnomePPP

GnomePPP is not installed by default but it is present within the default installation of Linux Mint. Your Linux Mint system comes with a local repository which is disabled by default. You can enable it by removing the comment sign "#" in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-repository.list and refreshing your APT cache. This repository contains GnomePPP as well as a collection of drivers.
Which is found at http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_nadia_kde.php.

I enabled all the repositories in the various lists. It solved these two errors:

E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?

However, a large number of failures are still occuring. My sources.lst file is still empty. Not sure what to do about that.

Reloading the Synaptic list returns the following errors:

There are a bunch of different issues in this topic, so first figure out if you issue matches the one I have a solution for.

If you have problems with updating on Linux Mint 14 KDE, and the messages you are getting are similar to:
Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/nadia/main/binary-amd64/Packages 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.92.201 80]
That is, you have failures for Ubuntu repositories because you are using the Linux Mint release name while the Ubuntu repositories of course only know Ubuntu release names (things to look for highlighted in red above), then the solution is to run the following command to fix your repositories configuration:

sudo sed -i 's/nadia/quantal/' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.list
Afterwards run the following to refresh:

Code: Select all

apt update
If you have any more errors, share those and include the output of:

Code: Select all

inxi -r
This issue is reported to the maintainer and hopefully will be remedied for Linux Mint 15. It specifically happens on Linux Mint 14 KDE. And to clarify, on this release your repositories are configured in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ and not in /etc/apt/sources.list.

I'm thinking this may need to be posted under another thread, or stear me to an existing thread.

My repository, through Synaptic, only returns 292 packages(total) that have not been installed.

I figured out my issue. Recommended and critical(or something like that) was unchecked in the update managers software sources. That's a really wierd setting for default.

Try running Software Manager first, then try Update Manager. I was unable to update using Update Manager until I stumbled on this. No issues since then.

Newbie here, don't fully understand what i'm talking about here.
HOWEVER, I do know I was having some of these exact errors, and I found a surprisingly simple fix that worked for me:
apt update
sudo apt-get update

Just an update for anyone still having issues. If mediabuntu.org is still coming up as not found, it is because it is offline and no longer maintained. On the website, they say it has been this way for several months and they have finally decided to pull the plug (Update as of 9-11-13). After I unchecked it in Software Sources, I stopped getting an error message in the Update Manager. I don't know if it has solved all my problems yet but it is at least a step in that direction. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the post! I keep getting errors related to the MediaBuntu. I unchecked this, and the Mint 15 computer, the errors have stopped. Is there a downside to this? Mr Bob22

This worked for me too. I'm on LM14.

I would expect LM to push and update to remove the source. Maybe not.
