Turning off the Dual Monitor

Post by dow »

How do I turn off the Dual monitor? The Prefs/set default won't set/save and I lose it on reboot. Is therea program I can uninstall that runs the dual monitor setup. I have a laptop and have no need to adding another monitor and having programs on invisible non existent monitor is frustrating.

System Settings --> Display and Monitor --> set unused one to 'Disabled'. Should happen by default.
Is that what you mean?

It does work but somehow it really doesn't write it to the preferences. I mean when I reboot it bounces back default dual monitor like it really didn't get saved. Perhaps for some reason maybe the system settings didn't have permissions to write the prefs or something. I did solved that problem ( I think) by uninstalling a program but I forgot which. I still want the magic that comes with kwin (I think) to allows window transparency and "keep above other"stuff.

Anyway why doesn't the system settings not saving to default?

Perhaps I can edit the file to "off". What file would that be?

Aahh......might be a problem then. Thought it was an extra one, didn't read first post carefully.
I believe its something to do with RandR. Is pointing you at something like this any good?

These programs are installed on my HP Pavilion dv7 laptop:

-----------------------------------
kde-workspace-randr
Screen resize and rotate tools from KDE Workspace.
------------------------------
libxcb-randr0
This package contains the library files needed to run software using libxcb-randr, the randr extension for the X C Binding.

The XCB library provides an interface to the X Window System protocol, designed to replace the Xlib interface. XCB provides several advantages over Xlib:

* Size: small library and lower memory footprint
* Latency hiding: batch several requests and wait for the replies later
* Direct protocol access: one-to-one mapping between interface and protocol
* Thread support: access XCB from multiple threads, with no explicit locking
* Easy creation of new extensions: automatically generates interface from
machine-parsable protocol descriptions

libxrandr
libXrandr provides an X Window System client interface to the RandR
extension to the X protocol.

The RandR extension allows for run-time configuration of display attributes
such as resolution, rotation, and reflection.

This package contains the debug versions of the library found in libxrandr2.
Non-developers likely have little use for this package.

More information about X.Org can be found at:

-------------------------------------------
x11-xserver-utils
An X client is a program that interfaces with an X server (almost always via
the X libraries), and thus with some input and output hardware like a
graphics card, monitor, keyboard, and pointing device (such as a mouse).

This package provides a miscellaneous assortment of X Server utilities
that ship with the X Window System, including:
- iceauth, a tool for manipulating ICE protocol authorization records;
- rgb;
- sessreg, a simple program for managing utmp/wtmp entries;
- xcmsdb, a device color characteristic utility for the X Color Management
System;
- xgamma, a tool for querying and setting a monitor's gamma correction;
- xhost, a very dangerous program that you should never use;
- xmodmap, a utility for modifying keymaps and pointer button mappings in X;
- xrandr, a command-line interface to the RandR extension;
- xrdb, a tool to manage the X server resource database;
- xrefresh, a tool that forces a redraw of the X screen;
- xset, a tool for setting miscellaneous X server parameters;
- xsetmode and xsetpointer, tools for handling X Input devices;
- xsetroot, a tool for tailoring the appearance of the root window;
- xstdcmap, a utility to selectively define standard colormap properties;
- xvidtune, a tool for customizing X server modelines for your monitor.
--------------------------------------------------
xserver-xorag-video-nouveau
This driver for the X.Org X server (see xserver-xorg for a further description)
provides support for NVIDIA Riva, TNT, GeForce, and Quadro cards.

This package provides 2D support including EXA acceleration, Xv and
RandR. 3D functionality is provided by the libgl1-mesa-dri package.

This package provides debugging symbols for this Xorg X driver.

KWin is the window manager. You won't see very much on your screen.

My best guess why the monitor preferances isn't permently saving is that my computer starts with a user that doesn't have admin power. I logout of this user and use my own user with admin power. I think I've tried saving defaults on all the users and didn't work when I reboot. Is there any files I can look at where I can edit, "no" on dual monitors? All I want to say is "I don't have a dual monitor". I'm tired of hidden apps and my users don't know how to see the apps via "move"

If you find out how, Please post as I'm having the same problem in KDE on my Dell Studio laptop. Funny thing is, I have Xfce DE & LXDE DE also on this laptop, all set to turn off laptop screen & use external monitor. Xfce & LXDE both work correctly, but KDE won't save the setting & next reboot, laptop displays back on.

Kinda irritating because the reason I'm using an external monitor in the first place is the laptop screen got hit & a big black splotch is in the middle of the screen. :(

I saw this problem years ago. Don't know why no solutions arrived. I'm downloading another distro. I can't have hidden disappearing apps all the time. Doesn't work for me. All I need to do is uninstall an app but don't know which.

All I can contribute is that I have the same problem with KDE.
I have used Mint and had no problem managing my screens.

I use an external Screen and whenever I pull the HDMI-cable, Mint turns on the primary screen right away.
In KDE all these funtions don't seem to work, the settings are never saved. It is extremely frustrating to do the same steps over and over again... no solutions?? :?: :x

Just trying Chakra Fritz on another machine and the installer says the distro has:
"Magic Monitor" functionality with the new KScreen, the display management utility in KDE that replaces krandr. KScreen improves the user experience when working with multiple monitors in KDE. It provides a modern user interface and can automatically save and restore screen configuration profiles.
Might be time to jump ship? :wink:

I had the same problem with my HP Pavilion dv7t 4100 (Linux Mint 15 KDE) Laptop. I was able to fix it by
1. KDE Menu --> Applications --> System --> Screen Resize & Rotate (KRandRTray)
2. right click icon that shows up on taskbar
3. select "Unify Outputs"
4. If when you restart and the dual monitor is still enabled, repeat steps 1 and 2, and this time select the desired resolution.

Hope this helps.

I tried Kubuntu and I saw the same problem although the system settings are a little different. After reading webpages, the word "Kscreen" kept coming up so I uninstalled Kcreen and that fixed the problem of having dual momitor setting when you only have one monitor.

Beats me why others didn't suggest Kscreen being the problem

I got into this mess cause I chose to have the double monitor feature during installation. But removing Kscreen will get rid of it.
