Hey Guys
I have 2 harddrives, 1 ssd for win 8 and a 1tb normal drive for other things like films and stuff. I woule like to install Linux mint to dual boot but I dont want it on the SSD-drive. Is that possible?
Can I just install Linux Mint on my 1 tb drive and dual boot? WIll GRUB work or do I need to setup this in some way? Does GRUB position itself on the SSD anyway whatever I do? It is fine to have GRUB on the ssd but not Linux MInt.
All help is thankfully taken

Re: Linux Mint on other harddrive than Win8?
I havent got a clue about win8n and its associated trying to keep other OS's at bay, but it should be similar to these

So you need to sort out safe boot and efi and or other problems associated with win 8 then using the above vids as a guide you should be able to get mint installed on the second disk.

Yes, you can install Mint on the TB drive.
The best way I have found to dual-boot Windows 8 and Mint on a UEFI machine is to use the rEFInd boot manager.

Try politeness; people will like you for it.
Re: Linux Mint on other harddrive than Win8?
Before you do anything else, determine your Windows boot mode. All computers that ship with Windows 8 pre-installed and that have a Windows 8 logo on the computer hardware should boot in EFI mode. If you installed Windows 8 yourself, though, it might boot in either EFI mode or in BIOS mode. This information is critical because it's almost always easiest to install Linux in the same boot mode as Windows, and this in turn affects the boot manager and/or boot loader that you use and how you install it. This this subpage of the rEFInd documentation for more information on how to determine your boot mode.

Okay I did check my SSD where Win 8 is and it says MBR Master boot record wich is Bios mode right?srs5694 wrote:Before you do anything else, determine your Windows boot mode. Re: Linux Mint on other harddrive than Win8?
Yes, if Windows is booting from an MBR disk, then it's installed in BIOS mode. This means you should follow BIOS-mode dual-boot installation instructions, not EFI-mode instructions. You should ignore Dngrsone's recommendation to use rEFInd, since that's an EFI-mode boot manager.flierman wrote:Okay I did check my SSD where Win 8 is and it says MBR Master boot record wich is Bios mode right?
Re:
It normally is when it's factory-installed, but there are people who upgrade older PCs, who re-install on PCs that shipped with Windows 8, or who build their own computers. For all these cases, it could be installed in either EFI mode or BIOS mode. Judging by forum posts I've seen, I'd say that most of the Windows 8 installations out there are on new PCs, and hence in EFI mode -- although it could be that such systems are just generating more posts.Dngrsone wrote:My apologies, I tend to assume that Windows 8 is installed EUFI.

Ah ok, thanks.
So could I then install Mint on my 1TB drive and follow the guide earlier written in this thread?
