Just so everyone knows, it's not really a good idea to download and install the RC before it's officially released especially in light of overloading the single "testing" server. The official RC is released and synced to all mirrors so this doesn't become a problem. Also, there's often significant changes made before the official RC release etc, etc.

That being said...

For those of us (ahem..cough, cough...like myself) who did download and install the um, pre-RC, so to speak, and as it was already stated by some here, keep a close eye on the official RC announcement, release notes and "Known Issues" for things that might have been changed for the official RC. It's also a good idea to check the .iso file date of the RC (currently 13-Nov-2013) to make sure the official RC release .iso is the same date. If it's later then you might want to install it again since there are occasions when certain bug fixes can't come down via updates to an...um...unofficial RC--so to speak. :D

Just had to say it.

The Version 16 RC's are live on the main site now!

The mirror for the HEAnet link appears to point to the same link in my past post with the same date and time stamp!

I just checked the date of the RC .iso files on thew FTP server for LM 16/Cinnamon and MATE and they're the same as when they were first uploaded on the 13th. So no new surprises it seems. :)

I have the 32 bit Cinnamon 2.0 version of LM 16 running on an older Lenovo laptop (dual core, all Intel chipsets and graphics) and it's running great for the most part. I did test Cinnamon with software rendering just out of habit though and the desktop is basically unusable (continuous crashes and re-spawns with only partial GUI recovery). As a comparison, a fully updated LM 15/Cinnamon ran okay in software rendering mode on the same laptop albeit a bit slow and resource hungry. Two very different versions of Cinnamon of course.

I also noticed that there's no "United States" setting available in "Cinnamon Settings/Regional Settings" under the "Format" tab and it can't be added. I chalk that up to this being an RC release and not the final though.

Would someone be kind enough to post the new Petra repos for use in synaptic? Thanks! (I can't seem to find them ... probably because I'm not smart enough.)

Probable you have a problem with your graphics card driver and haven't installed another driver yet?

Possible workaround: open Chromium, go to Settings, at the bottom click to show advanced settings, then at the bottom under System category click to disable hardware acceleration. Better to fix the graphics card driver issue. I've run into this issue with another distro's install on VirtualBox, when the guest utilities weren't working so I couldn't use hardware acceleration. Couldn't use Google websites then till I switched of hardware acceleration :)

This is interesting. At first you were right. Then I found out when I couldn't install Dropbox 64 bit that I had installed the 32 bit iso.
So I reinstalled the 64 bit iso and now it works again with acceleration turned on.

I know it doesn't make sense, I thought I'd mention it anyway.

BTW there is no restricted driver for Intel Graphics AFAIK. Or at least I cannot install anything other than the default.

I'm pretty sure that's because there is only one Linux driver for Intel cards.
Problems? Tell us EXACTLY what you've done and what you expected to happen, IN DETAIL. That will save us questions, and we should get along better,

I have dysgraphia. This means I might have understood you incorrectly through no fault of my own.

Intel graphics drivers are actually part of the Linux kernel itself, each kernel version having it's own version number of Intel graphics driver if I remember correctly. For example, one of the early 3.8 kernels (3.8.21 or close to it) would not load the Intel graphics driver even though it was actually part of the kernel so Cinnamon would only run using the gallium .04 software driver. I believe this was actually a kernel problem rather than the Intel driver (Seen in LM 15/Cinnamon). Updating to 3.8.25 solved the problem. I could be wrong about the exact version numbers but you get the idea.

@ Redsandro - Could you open a terminal and type the following and post the results here?

Code: Select all
inxi -G

This will show what video driver you're currently running.

It doesn't really make a difference since I replaced the 32 bit Mint with the 64 bit Mint and it works correctly now. I would have to reinstall the wrong version to see what the issue is, but frankly I'm just happy it works now. :)

If that's the case then open Software Sources ( via the Menu of Mint Updates "Edit/Software sources", but not via Synaptic) and find another mirror. Easy enough to do. By the way, the default mirrors (for US users) are working okay. No problems updating. If your located somewhere else it could be the mirror for your country that's the problem. :)

Those are the default ones and I've had the same problem crop up now and then today. As I said previously, I went into "Software Sources" and selected another mirror for the Mint repositories. When selecting the mirror, the one that shows to be the fastest isn't always the fastest. Best bet is to select one nearest you and/or that works the best.
