X11 forwarding issue

Post by offonoff »

Hello,

I have an lubuntu server that I want to access from my Mint 15 computer. I set up X11 forwarding according to all the information I could find, and there is a probalem I don;t know how to google for.

I can ssh -X (or -Y) into the server. While in the desktop environment of my Mint computer (tried frm tty 1 and it wouldn't work at all) I ssh into the server and run a program that requires X. I get an unfamiliar, fullscreen, graphical login screen for mint, with my mint computer login name. I try a wrong password and it says wrong password. I try the correct password and everything goes black for a second and I am returned to the mint desktop except all the windows I had opened are closed (including the terminal I was ssh'ing from).

Why is Mint asking me to log in if I am already ssh'd into the lubuntu server? What is this log in screen and how do I get the graphical output from the server on my computer?

Thanks for reading,

Elliot

The normal ssh connection methods..

In your case, because you say you want to connect to the server (Lubuntu) and then run an application with that server, I am thinking that a VPN connection will be more useful to you, will give you the Linux desktop you expect to see
  • The desktop you did get is probaly the X-server running on Lubuntu, not your client Mint X-server/desktop..

No, I do not want a desktop environment from the lubuntu server, I want only the graphical output of the program I run. I want the lubuntu server to serve only one program and with a minimal amount of overhead. A window manager is unnecessary for what I want.

Also, the login screen is very clearly Mint, because it says "Mint" and has the mint logo on it. It also has only the Mint computer's user as an option and accepts only the password from the Mint computer.

further update.

On closer inspection, xclock and xeyes work fine, and do not cause that log in screen. The program that I want to run, zsnes (a supernintendo emulator), does not work/does cause the log in screen.
