Cinnamon 2 crashes with nVidia drivers

Post by darkixion »

Hi all.

I've just installed Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon RC (64-bit) and all was fine. However, it was rendering in software mode, so I went to the device drivers option in the System Settings and changed it from the nouveau driver to the nVidia 319 driver which was highlighted as recommended. I then clicked apply. After a short while this finished. I logged out, but when trying to log back in again, I get the message:
Do you want to restart Cinnamon?

Cinnamon just crashed. You are currently running in Fallback Mode.

No / Yes
If I select Yes, this repeats.

The syslog shows:

Re: Cinnamon 2 crashes with nVidia drivers

Post by Captain Enchilada »

I have the same issue on a GTX 650 with the recommended 319 drivers. I had this issue in the beta of cinnamon 2 a week or so ago, even on other OS's. The problem definitely is in cinnamon, which is a good start at solving this issue at least. So far, my only resolution was to revert back the drivers, but I'll look around and see what I can do.

EDIT: Tried apt-get install nvidia-current and it's downloading 304 now. I'll report back and see if this fixes it.
EDIT2: Nope, I'll use another DE for now, but I might go back to nouveau if I need to use cinnnamon.

Re: Cinnamon 2 crashes with nVidia drivers

I should perhaps also mention that it I reboot, shortly after selecting Linux Mint 16 from GRUB, harddisk activity stops altogether and I have a black screen. At this point switching to any of the ttys doesn't work. When rebooting again and going into recovery mode, the boot messages come up but then stop permanently.

Also, when I reinstalled it and didn't change the driver to the nVidia one, I tried a system update. The system froze while trying to update GRUB and eventually I had to reboot... then an empty GRUB prompt came up. I've since retried this, although this time it wanted to update mintsystem first. Installed all further updates, rebooted and it rebooted fine.

So I retried the "recommended" nvidia driver, just in case the mintsystem update had fixed things, logged out, logged back in again, and it comes up with the original "Do you want to restart Cinnamon" message after it crashed. After rebooting, I'm back to the same black screen after GRUB without access to any terminal window.

The last lines of the boot messages read:

Code: Select all

I don't see any mention of a graphics device.

Well, I could try that, but the question is, why do I need to resort to an external PPA for something that's supposedly supported out of the box? I haven't had any trouble with bundled nVidia drivers up until this release, and I'm a tad concerned that the release has passed with flying colours given that I can't even get basic nVidia binary support working. I suspect there's some element unique to my set up that's causing the issue, but I'm not sure where to start diagnosing it.

Looking here, I don't think the GTX Titan is supported by the nVidia 319 driver (the latest version provided by Ubuntu), but it is supported by the nVidia 331 driver (which you will find in Xedgers).

So it's not a case of they didn't test for it because they didn't want to, but they couldn't based on the default provided packages.

I experience exactly the same problems with my Notebook that has a GT 540M built in. officially supported by version 331.20. But I can't get it to work,i get that crash on the first reboot and black screens after that. Tried with ubuntu 13.10 too, same result. seems to be a more fundamental issue :-(
So even with the right version....crash

I've now tried using xorg-edgers, and installed the latest nVidia drivers. When logging out and back in again, Cinnamon continues to crash. Rebooting also has the same issue where the screen remains black after selecting Linux Mint 16 from GRUB.

I'm wondering whether it's anything to do with UEFI, or something I need to change in the UEFI settings. I've changed various things, but nothing is fixing the issue. Legacy settings actually make things worse believe it or not.

I can assure you IF we got the same issue, and it does look that way, it has nothing to do with UEFI since my machine doesnt even have uefi yet. Have you tried with std Ubuntu yet? I experience the same issue there with unity.
Besides is it possible you have a optimus setup ? Even with the new drivers there seem to be quite a few issues with that, so for now bumblebee might be our best option (if you have a optimus system that is)

Re: Cinnamon 2 crashes with nVidia drivers

I hope this doesn't constitute necro-posting.

I'm having similar--though not as severe problems, and also want to update my drivers for my nvidia (GeForce GTX 650 ti --no optimus), which, according to Nvidia's handy guide should be version 331.20, kindly available in a Linux 64-bit version. ---THE CRUX:

Synaptic Package Manager or other official sources don't seem to offer this driver installation option, and Petra's recommended driver [319] in Driver Manager isn't working for me--in fact, I think it is worse than Nouveau.

So then some folks recommend using this rather sketchy Xedgers thing, while others say it's way too risky to use that service, perhaps especially for a newbie who might not be able to confront breakage that could arise from implementation.

So then others suggest downloading the driver and installing it manually in what seems like a logical procedure, like this one described in Ubuntu Handbook.

And yet I have also encountered advice NOT to download the .run package from Nvidia directly, without saying why not.

So why not? What's wrong with it? Why would it be better to do it the Xedgers way?

Perhaps all that is necessary is to make sure Nouveau is blacklisted so that it doesn't try to interfere with the proprietary driver... I am tempted to try a manual install of the 331.20 driver, but--as an admittedly absolute n00b--the conflicting advice makes it difficult to decide which method would be a better starting place to avoid effing up the ol' system.

For now, I guess I will try using the "recommended" driver and blacklisting, and report back if it works. But still, I would like to get a clearer idea of the thinking behind all this, instead of continuing to crash my system like a bull in a china shop: So for those of us with new and inquiring linux minds--can you please explain the reasoning behind these various strains of nvidia driver upgrade/installation advice?

EDIT: An update -------------------------

None of the graphics card offerings that came pre-packaged in Driver Manager, including the Nouveau, have been working for me. I keep getting blocky colors all over my monitor and such. So, I went ahead and ended up following the procedures in this thread pinned at the top of this forum, and it seems to have worked for me. I only just managed to install it without much testing, though, so we'll see...

I should add that it didn't all work smoothly and perfectly for me, even following those steps very carefully. I got the WARNING about the modprobe config file and that I should refer to a README on how to correctly disable the Nouveau kernel driver, but I followed the additional recommended steps [sudo apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-nouvea libdrm-nouveau1a nvidia*] and then I was able to install the nvidia driver (read through the above-mentioned thread for clarification, including responses from other forum members).

BUT after installing the driver, upon rebooting, I kept looping in fallback mode with crazy huge resolution (about 1/4 of my normal desktop filling my monitor)... Restarting again availed nothing. So then I booted into Safe mode and ran chkdsk, just to see if it would find anything wonky. It didn't. So I booted normally, and, magically, I was back to my normal desktop with crystalline resolution, and Driver Manager tells me its using my manually installed driver.

Hopefully this is the end this particular saga for me.

So if you have a very recent nVidia driver that's not supported by the drivers in Driver Manager, and Nouveau isn't working for you, and Optimus isn't your issue (you need Bumblebee for that), give manual installation a try, as outlined in the above thread. It seems to have worked for me. *fingers remain crossed*

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
sudo apt-get install linux-source
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current
sudo apt-get install nvidia-settings
sudo nvidia-xconfig
This should create a /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Also make sure etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-graphics-drivers.conf blacklist's that pesky nouveau

Reboot

You might want to update initrd file and add nomodset to your /etc/defaults/grub if it's not already there. Not sure just habit,

sudo update-initramfs -u

sudo vi /etc/defaults/grub
Add or edit line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"

This worked on a Mint 16 clean install on Dell E6530
Nvidia NVS 5200M (mobile) and Intel HD graphis 4000

Hi rramey,

I am facing a similar issue: http://forum.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=155780

I've been advised on the thread to install Bumblebee AND a power management for the card. Do you know anything about that? If it is necessary - Why is it required and how to do that?

I have exactly the same problem with my laptop with the nVidia GeForce 540M card and optimus. I'm stuck in fallback mode when I try and log in. The problem first manifested today when I updated my LMDE install to UP8. My logs look the same as the OPs. Has this been reported as a bug?

I've just installed Linux Mint Debian Edition, did a full update to pack 8, rebooted, installed the nVidia drivers, and I'm *still* getting this issue.

I get the same problem, and have recently upgraded from Linux Mint 15 to 16. However I'm running a AMD A8 with an integrated GPU

Ah... I'm working on this or a related problem as well. I have a GTX 460 video card that worked fine with Mint 13. When I upgraded to Mint 16 and logged in, I got an alert that the X desktop was using S/W drivers and that I should try different drivers to get H/W acceleration. The ones that shipped with 16 all resulted in a Cinnamon crash when logging in. (At least the two 319 versions - I do not recall if I tried others.) I did some searching and found instructions for downloading the latest drivers directly from NVIDIA. Having done this before (to gain CUDA capabilities) I proceeded. Their install script required blacklisting the nouveau module and rebooting. At that point I found that X seemed to be running fine with the 319 driver. However I decided to proceed with the 331.49 install and then found that following the procedure I am left with a system that does not run X. :( During the NVIDIA install it replaced /etc/X11/xorg.conf so I restored the old one. No joy.

My suggestion is that you try blacklisting the nouveau kernel module first and if that works, be happy! If you mess with something long enough, it will break. ;)

Now I'll be
1) searching for a solution to the present problem
2) searching for how to back out the NVIDIA drivers
3) Having a go with another distro. One thing I really liked about Mint was the ease of installation but I seem to have a bump in the road on this one.

Edit: Problem solved. I found a post that described removing and reinstalling all nvidia packages. I removed all packages that had nvidia in their name and reran the program from NVIDIA to install the most recent driver. I also skipped the 32 bit compatibility libs. On completion I rebooted the PC and X came up fine. I logged in and find the 331.49 driver working w/out difficulty. Driver manager reports a user installed driver in use and all other choices are grayed out. (And at this point I believe I will stop fiddling with it.)

I tried this, and it didn't work for me. Could you outline the steps you tried? or post the link you used?

for the moment I have it running on Mint 14, but everything I tried with Mint16 was unsuccessful, and I tried everything suggested on this thread, and on other threads.
