HOW TO - Install Canon PIXMA ip 1800 Printer drivers.

Post by Paulm »

After installing Mint Debian I checked to see if my printer would work with the default cups.
It did recognized the printer but failed to work.

This is how to fixed the problem:

Go to https://launchpad.net/~michael-gruz/+ar ... non/+index
Which has Ubuntu Canon drivers.

Then click 'View package details'

Click on cnijfilter-common-3.50-2Ubuntu3
and download the .deb file.

Then go to cnijfilter-common-2.70-3Ubuntu3
and download the ip1800 .deb file.

Now first click on the cnijfilter-common-3.50-2Ubuntu2 file and install

Next install the cnijfilter-common-2.70-3Ubuntu3 file

Reboot your computer, switch on the printer, your printer drivers will now be installed.

This should work for other Canon printers, select your model of printer, do remember to install the 'Common' file first.

A big THANK-YOU to Paulm for his directions. His install advice worked perfectly for my Canon iP1600 under LMDE (latest) and also under LMint12 . You can review my frustrations under LinuxMint - Hardware - Printing . Its great to get such support through these forums.

Installed Mint 13 as a dual boot with XP and have a PIXMA iP1800. Paulm's solution worked just as advertised. Thanks a million.

I tried this to install a driver for my Canon IP 1600 printer. I have read that the same driver for the 1800 will suit my printer.

I followed the instructions, but could not find a .deb file for either my model printer on the IP1800.

So I'm stuck untill I receive some help. Did I do something wrong here?

It works fine once you find drivers, see my little writeup, for info:

Thanks. However, I have followed that set of direction before and got stuck both times (or more) at the point where I am asked to download the .deb file.

Which .deb file is the one I should use? This is a screen shot of what choices I am given:

You have the correct download site, you will have to look for two deb files that are for your printer type.

For the ip1800 you need:
< cnijfilter-common-3.50-2Ubuntu4_i386.deb >
< cnijfilter-ip1800series_2.70-3ubuntu5_i386.deb >

Note this is for a 32 Bit Sys config. If you are using a 64 Bit sys. then select the ones for your 64 bit config.

I did manage to find those files and download them, however, my printer would still not work.

So, I tried going back to the control centre. There I clicked on printers and added my printer. It then searched for available drivers and led me to the "gutenprint" option which I followed and installed. My printer now works! I have sure learned a few things along the way.

Thanks for the assistance.
