GPU lockups all the way

Postby Wunderbaum on Fri Jan 24, 2014 12:57 pm

After a while, LM just crashes. The screen is rendered uninterpretable, just like in some video game glitch.
I've switched to WMaker, but I still experience these problems.
I use the Ubuntu-based version with an nVidia GPU.
What is the cause of the problem? The system which Linux Mint is based on? (I experienced similar problems with Ubuntu)
Or maybe Nouveau, the free driver?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Did you solve this issue? I recently installed Linux Mint on a spare drive and now I'm having the same problem.

The desktop drops to the console and outputs errors:

Code: Select all
nouveau E [     DRM] GPU lockup - switching to software fbcon
nouveau E [Xorg[1565]] failed to idle channel 0xcccc0001  [Xorg[1565]]
nouveau E [     PFIFO] [0000:01:00.0] playlist update failed
etc.

This continues for a few minutes with the final error messaging being:

Code: Select all
nouveau E [     PFIFO] [0000:01:00.0] channel 4 [kwin[2201]] kick timeout

After this error message, the system locks up and displays garbage on the screen like you described above. My display adapter is a GeForce GTX 580

Have you looked in the additional/proprietary drivers and installed the nVidia drivers?
Problems? Tell us EXACTLY what you've done and what you expected to happen, IN DETAIL. That will save us questions, and we should get along better,

I have dysgraphia. This means I might have understood you incorrectly through no fault of my own.

I solved this problem way long ago with the installation of proprietary drivers.
