New UP? A new interesting challenge!
Yesterday evening I found that UP8 was finally here, therefore I read accurately the UP notes and then started it via Upload Manager.
It downloaded everything and then, when it started installing, after 2 minutes it gave me an error (segmentation fault, if I remember well) and the process suddenly stopped.
I had to reboot the machine, relogin again and continue the update process via recovery mode. This time successfully.
Now I can report some issues discovered so far:
1) Splash screen (that one after Grub): it is disapperead. Now I have only a long river of commands on my screen for about 20 seconds. How to fix it?
2) Login screen (this is the funniest): it is the new one, with a grey-green background. Nice. The user box is on the center-left. But in it I can see an anonymous picture and no user name. Quite ugly.
Therefore I type my password in the blank field and press enter.
3) Google-talk-plugin: it doesn't work. I have tried to reinstall it, relaunch Firefox or reboot the laptop.... No way to have a video chat with my girlfriend anymore. I terribly need it again, my friends!
Finally... a good news... one thing that has been fixed from UP7: now usb devices are recognized "out-of-the-box". No need to downgrade gvfs anymore.
I look forward to hearing from you.
thanks in advance!

1. the splash screen is using plymouth. you can use debian-plymouth manager to configure it.
2. I'm not using mdm but I'm sure this issue is configureable via mdm config

Hi palimmo,
Or in a terminal with: mdmsetup.
Hope this helps.
You can change the MDM theme with the app: Login Window.2) Login screen (this is the funniest): it is the new one, with a grey-green background. Nice. The user box is on the center-left. But in it I can see an anonymous picture and no user name. Quite ugly.
Therefore I type my password in the blank field and press enter.

Re: New UP? A new interesting challenge!
That's something new, I haven't seen any segfaults during the UP8 testing. Can you remember what package it was?palimmo wrote:after 2 minutes it gave me an error (segmentation fault, if I remember well)
You were lucky that a half-upgraded system booted fine.palimmo wrote:I had to reboot the machine, relogin again and continue the update process via recovery mode.
Where that plugin is used? I mean, where do you plug it in?palimmo wrote:Google-talk-plugin: it doesn't work. I have tried to reinstall it, relaunch Firefox or reboot the laptop.... No way to have a video chat with my girlfriend anymore. I terribly need it again, my friends!
Also please tell where did you install it from.
That's strange because gvfs is essentially the same as before. Maybe the problem was in some other package that's now upgraded...palimmo wrote:Finally... a good news... one thing that has been fixed from UP7: now usb devices are recognized "out-of-the-box". No need to downgrade gvfs anymore.
Re: New UP? A new interesting challenge!
Unfortunately I haven't taken note of the package name.Monsta wrote:That's something new, I haven't seen any segfaults during the UP8 testing. Can you remember what package it was?palimmo wrote:after 2 minutes it gave me an error (segmentation fault, if I remember well)
As usual, I need it for the videochat/hangout in the browser via my google gmail account.Monsta wrote:Where that plugin is used? When I login into my gmail account, the chat on the main page (if the google-talk-plugin is correctly installed) enables me to make videocalls.
This time, it appears like I have not installed it...hence I can do only text chat (quite frustrating...).
The package is delivered directly by google clicking on the chat icon... This should be the specific page for the download

In Firefox -> about:plugins it seems correctly installed

thanks kurotsugi. But in synaptic there is no debian plymouth related package. Is there no plymouth manager in cinnamon?kurotsugi wrote:1. the splash screen is using plymouth. you can use debian-plymouth manager to configure it.

mdm: I'll try to play with it a little bit.

The absence of name is a bug. Clem has just announced it will be corrected tomorrow. Best thing is to use a GDM theme until then.palimmo wrote:mdm: I'll try to play with it a little bit.

or plymouth-theme-mint ?
or plymouth-theme-mint ?

I had plymouth-theme-mint installed. Now I've added the others.killer de bug wrote:do you have plymouth-themes-all installed ?

Re: New UP? A new interesting challenge!
I don't know, I don't use plymouth. But google may help you...
Re: New UP? A new interesting challenge!
Google Talk plugin hasn't worked for me in Firefox for months. I haven't upgraded to UP8 yet, but in UP7 with Firefox installed separately so it constantly updates, something broke between Firefox and Google Talk awhile back. Have you tried Chromium? It's still working fine in Chromium for me, but we shall see what happens with UP8.
Re: New UP? A new interesting challenge!
I have installed plymouth-themes-all and other packages related and now it works. The theme is not excellent (is that one with the big linux mint icon in the center) but it's ok.killer de bug wrote:do you have plymouth-themes-all installed ?
or plymouth-theme-mint ?
How could I change it?

Until a few days ago (UP7 and FF26) google talk plugin has worked as always.Ken_g6 wrote:Google Talk plugin hasn't worked for me in Firefox for months. Now, UP8 and FF26 (since a few minutes FF27) it doesn't work.. even if I can see it in about:plugins.
Same situation in Chrome!

SOLVED! Now google-talk-plugin works again in Firefox (27 in my case).palimmo wrote:Until a few days ago (UP7 and FF26) google talk plugin has worked as always.Ken_g6 wrote:Google Talk plugin hasn't worked for me in Firefox for months. Here I found the solution:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/ ... ZzFG6or9Tw
removing libudev0.
This breaks Google Chrome. But you should be able to fix it by unistall/reinstall it again.

Re: New UP? A new interesting challenge!
I never use mint's plymouth manager but debian have their own tool called 'debian-plymouth-manager' you can install it via 'sudo aptitude install debian-plymouth-manager'. with this tool we can see all installed them, change the theme, or even install a new theme. you'll also need to make sure that grub has 'splash' on his parameter.
Re: New UP? A new interesting challenge!
It's not from Debian, it's from SolydXK. Originally this tool appeared here (before the author went to create SolydXK).kurotsugi wrote:debian have their own tool called 'debian-plymouth-manager'
