Graphics not loading in Steam

Post by ducksarewet »

I just built a new system. Its not intended as a gaming rig, but I hoped to play some games. When playing Half-life 2 or portal on Steam, the graphics are black with the ocasional grey polygon. How do I fix this? Here is what I have:

Steam requires a separate nVidia card. LAS said that an ATI card would work also. You can download "Ye Olde Steam OSe" with support for older computers.

OP is talking about the Steam client, not Steam OS...

In Windows you'd probably manage running Half-Life 2 no problem, but in Linux I'd be wary about it, since Windows graphics support > Linux graphics support.

That translates to the Intel HD Graphics P3000 or 2000, if this page is right.

Wow, Intel HD 3000 or 2000? I'm surprised the game actually launched.
If this is a desktop, I suggest purchasing a dedicated video card.
Stick with Nvidia GeForce cards. You could get something as low as $50 but the more you spend, the more games you will be able to play.

I have a Chromebook running ChrUbuntu and it has an Intel HD 2000 chip. I can play a few games, but most modern shader 2.0 & 3.0 games won't run.

Blatant lies, HD3000/2000 should run Half-Life 2 just fine (it can even run in DX7 mode, I played it on a GF4MX card with standard settings!).

Seems like Linux Mint 16 could have something broken, as this guy also can't run a game that should run fine, having just black screen:
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 5&t=154980

Anyway, try to update MESA drivers to newer version from different repositories than Mint's default. Maybe the new MESA10 will help, as they have made some improvements for Source games, according to their log. Unfortunately, as I mentioned, Linux Mint 16 seems to have some issues so it might not be of assistance at all. If so, reverting back to Mint 15 or installing another distribution would be the best choice...

intel is one of biggest contributor in linux. their driver on linux works as good as windows driver of even better. statement which saying windows driver better than linux driver is only true for ATI and Nvidia. as for the nvidia card suggestion, IMO that's not a good idea since nvidia have worst linux support. ATI is better but intel is the best.

The main reason I suggest an Nivida card is because I have tested over 80 games with my GeForce 550 Ti and most of them run just fine in Mint.
But I have read countless posts on Linux sites about Catalyst and AMD video drivers causing issues in games.

In the gaming realm, Intel doesn't have dedicated video cards, so I don't even consider them in the equation when it comes to PC Gaming.
A solid gamer wants High Resolution, high graphical settings and will need a dedicated card to do it.

The nVidia driver is SO much better than the AMD driver. That said, the open source nouveau really sucks.

The issue here is that libtxc isn't loaded, so the textures aren't loading properly. Do the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0 libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0:i386
Half-Life 2 will then work just fine with Intel Graphics.

This works. I was having the same problems. I tried TF2 and Left 4 Dead and they would just be black screens with some grey. Now it works. Thanks a lot. New system had me worried I had a defective part.
