Beginners Guide to Installing and Using Linux Mint 11

Postby belovedmonster on Sun Jun 08, 2008 10:49 am

If you are new to Mint or Linux in general and want a simple user guide on how to use and install Mint without all the confusing jargon then please consult our User Guide:
http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/ ... h_11.0.pdf

If you ask a question which is already covered in the guide you will simply be recommended to download the guide, so you are speeding up the process if you just read it in the first place. Although if something in the guide fails to make sense to you or you want more explanation then don't hesitate to ask it here on the forums, we will do our best to help you.

belovedmonster,

The file seems to be corrupted. Is it on my end or yours?

It works fine for me. But unless you have posted this several times in different messages I think you are not the only one who has commented with having problems opening the file. I've noticed a few comments about it.

No, this is my only post on the subject.

I got an error window saying the file couldn't be opened with kpdf.

I got it. Must be something to do with Firefox 3.0. The link is pulling in the text above it too.

I went to the site and downloaded it from there without a problem.

I believe this PDF guide should be included in the next version of Mint Live CD.

I have attempted to view the Users Guide from the Wiki introduction section and in each instance am informed that the link has been not found .

The howto link whilst working seems to be devoted to installing which is not quite what I am looking for. Is it possible to either have the links reinstated or have a full pdf of the guide made available for download.

I do not want to pester the life out of the forum asking questions that I am sure will be contained in the guide. I like very much what I see and if I can resolve my booting problems anticipate that I will adopt Elyssa as my main OS.

Thanking you in anticipation

Many thanks for your kind assistance. I shall have a read of the document and see how many daft posts it avoids.

Hello, I'm very new to Linux

I'm trying to install Linux Mint Light Edition (Elyssa) to a inspirion 1100 Dell Laptop

I boot from CD using f12 and i get into the installer easy enough. I get past the screen that says Linux Mint boot in 10 seconds. After that some words fly across the screen and it says ready. So it starts installing (or I assumed). After that i just get a black screen, Bad burn? or not enough ram (The laptop only has 256 RAM on it). On my frist attempt I got a circle (I assume is like the hourglass) and then the cursor was in the center of the screen and i couldn't move it. At first I may have thought it froze because my battery was extremely low on the laptop. So I restarted and tried again. I got past the first Linux Mint screen but now I didn't get a mouse its now just a black screen.

Can anyone assist me? Sorry if I am not using correct terminology, kinda a newb :?

tikigod13,

I suspect your problem is related to not having enough ram to install. I would suggest you use Gparted to make a swap partition of about 512 MB and reboot before you try to install. This should help greatly if that is your only problem.
