I'd really like to make the 'show desktop' different, change the colour or a different icon. I often have to stop and think when I need it because the icon looks similar to the files icon. I know the two icons don't look exactly the same, maybe I'm must getting old or someething
Any tips would be appreciated.
Is there a way to change the icon for show desktop applet?

easy-peasy! just install another icon theme. One good place is this http://gnome-look.org/

That's a possibility thanks. But I like the mint start button and the other icons are ok. My line of thinking is, is there an icon file somewhere specifically for the show desktop applet? I thought I could make a new icon and delete the old one. I remember doing something similar many moons ago (not necessarily the applet).
If not I may have look to see if there any icons gnome-look to suit my needs.

Sure, you can check to see which icon set you are using and substitute a different icon from another icon set, or make your own.tiantian wrote:is there an icon file somewhere specifically for the show desktop applet?
