New member from Michigan

Post by ClutchDisc »

Hello all, I'm new to the forums here, and kind of new to Linux as well. I am an IT tech student, going for my bachelors degree. I look forward to learning all I can about Linux! My two favorite Linux distros are Ubuntu and Linux Mint. :D

Thanks all! I am enjoying the world of Linux....it's taking a little getting used to, but I'm liking every minute! I already have Ubuntu up and running on an older Dell desktop. Now if I can get the brightness problem figured out on my laptop I'll be all set. I want to put Linux Mint on my laptop if possible.

mint runs very well on dell machines, depending on its age and spec [if 5 yrs or less] try the cinamon edition if older then the mate edition, or if you prefer then use xfce

The machine is from 2004. Would Mint in it's mate form run faster on there than Ubuntu? Which would I be better off with? The dell has 1 gb of RAM.

I haven't used straight ubuntu for about 4 years, so cant comment on current comparative speeds, I can say i have a now 12 yr old acer [1.5 celeronM 1gb ] running mint with mate and it is still quicker than running xp when new. All i can recommend is give it a try
