Has anybody tried Cylon Linux?

Post by Ham Radio »

Hi Guys! I wanted to get your take on this Ubuntu Based Distribution called Cylon Linux. It looks pretty cool. I think I am still going to stay with Linux Mint because of a larger community, and the continued development on Cinnamon, and Nemo. However, this Distribution is pretty compelling..

What do you guys think?

Desktop Environment : Gnome Classic (also contains Unity & Gnome Shell)

And way too much bloatware for me. The list of apps is way too much to keep track of and has 5 browsers installed!
My system would always be updating with that many apps installed. Nice it's based on more stable 12.04 tho.

Not for me as what minimal packages installed and even Mint has a few I don't need or want.
And I can install what I need and nothing else.
As the more you install and don't use the more clutter and system needing to hookup with the repo's for more frequently updating required.

I do use 2-3 application for one task but having 5 browsers are too much even for me. Especially when my favourite ones are not included... I would also need to add MATE or XFCE. So there is no gain for me installing Cylon.

From the name I thought it might be a BSG themed distro but Definition: Cylon was a seventh century Athenian aristocrat (eupatrid) who, after winning an Olympic victory in 640 B.C., tried to make himself tyrant of Athens ...

(Actually that is something that seems to be missing from linux - specific themes like Start Trk, B5, Bsg, firefly, western, medieval etc..)

I really liked it. It had the right balance of eye candy. it isn't on distro watch yet(its on the waitlist page).

It is a perfect distro for locations with poor internet connectivity reliability.

All the software you could want is there and once you make you choices of what you use on a regular basis you can uninstall to free up space and reduce update checks. So try those 5 browsers and then uninstall the 3 you don't like.

Package Management : Debian Packager with APT
Desktop Environment : Gnome Classic (also contains Unity & Gnome Shell)
Kernel Version : 3.2.0.30.32
OS Family : Unix-like
Source Model : Partially Open Source (Contains non-free applications)
Current Version : 12.04.1
Parent Distribution : Ubuntu Linux 12.04 LTS
License : Mainly the GNU GPL and various other free software
Architecture : Intel x86 (32bit)
Installation Medium : 2.5 GB ISO image

It seems there are way more apps than anyone could want or need. However, I can see where it might appeal to some folks.

Way too many apps for me. One of them is even Facebook. OK, I admit that I have an account there. But an installed app for FB? No way!!! Five browsers is a bit much as was pointed out.
