Remote desktop

Hi,

I am married. That seems a strange opening for a thread in a technological forum for LinuxMint. But picture this: I installed a LinuxMint machine which is at the top floor of Our house. My wife is downstairs. Luckily she likes to have me around. I like that as well but also like to play with my new installation. Can anyone help me with a good application to use my laptop (WindowsXP), sitting next to my wife making a remote connection to my LinuxMint (Bianca) machine upstairs. I looked into VNC but saw the most of the software is not free and does not gave me the Linux free feeling thou. I have experience with Samba but that only works for files sharing. It works very good actually.

You're in the M$ world so be prepared to pay $$$$ VNC is the best way to go if you don't want to pay money. Personally I fork out the $$$ and I use Xmanager, pretty decent and don't have to pay the fortune with Hummingbird Exceed.

I like using an Xwindows emulator for M$ when I'm locked into that world. Either that or go with cygwin

TightVNC is released under the GPL, it's free as in free speech and free beer and it works perfectly.

The only downside to VNC is that it's not the fastest of all possible solutions but for a connection via LAN it should be OK.

There are plenty of VNC tutorials floating around the web, you should easily find them via Google.

Why don't you use the "Remote Desktop" function that comes with *buntu (including Mint) and a free viewer like "RealVNC"...?

VNC works OK, but a real Xwindows client works best. I also like being able to launch individual applications without having to mess with VNC. So my recommendation really is to get a Xwindows app for M$.

There is a slight difference: If you use an X11 client and if by any chance the connection breaks down (might be easily the case e.g. with WLAN) then also your application will die and you will lose all data. No such thing with VNC: If the connection breaks down ... easy: You just reconnect and you will find your applications are still working.
