WiFi doesn't work - Broadcom BCM4318

Post by watengr01 »

Hello
The wireless doesn't work with new installation of Mint on Acer 3003wlmi notebook. I have tried every solution posted in various locales but have not been successful. Can anyone help? Wired network fine.

Thank you chili555.
The proposed fix did not work. I noticed that the fix assumed a clean install. My machine is not a clean install as prevously i have tried every other solution I could find. Is there a way to clear the other fixes as I don't know what was installed.

Please let us see:

Code: Select all

lspci -nn | grep 0280
I believe that's mentioned in the sticky as needed to identify your device.

I don't mean this as any disrespect to you, Michael; I mean it as an opprtunity to tell Broadcom owners a bit more about their devices.

In Broadcoms, the pci.id is everything. There are probably 30 different devices and four different methods to get them going. The 'Additional Drivers' tool installs bcmwl-kernel-source which is not correct for all devices for which it installs it! Check the pci.id:

Code: Select all

lspci -nn -d 14e4:
Then check the sticky I referenced above for instructions.

In this specific case, Michael, it is NOT the same driver.

Please get a temporary wired ethernet connection, open a terminal and do:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
Detach the ethernet, reboot and let us hear your report.

Thanks very much for this tutorial, chili555 ! I have just installed Mint 16 on an Acer TravelMate 5320 with a Broadcom BCM4311 wireless card, on which previously Windows XP had been run but whose owner was looking for an alternative OS, now that Windows has discontinued all support for XP. The installation, as in my experience is usually the case for Mint 16, went very well, and I had no problem connecting to the net via cable, but was unable to get the wireless alternative to work, despite trying both the Linux non-free firmware and that provided by Broadcom one. The crux lay in purging the machine of the latter, as per your instructions above, re-installing the the non-free Linux firmware just to be sure, and then rebooting. Viola ! Net access even with the cable withdrawn !... :)

This is important to me as I expect many members of our club for retirees with computer interests are going to be requesting help in finding a replacement for XP on their old computers. Not everybody can afford a new machine nor is purchasing a newer Windows OS an acceptable alternative ; for me personally, moreover, it is a joy to be able to offer them a GNU/Linux alternative which, to my mind, is superior to both Windows XP and Windows 8.1 (even with Classic Shell installed on the latter, as we always do, so that users aren't forced to learn a whole new interface which is poorly suited to the needs of those who access their computers by means of keyboard and mouse)....

Again, many thanks !

Awesome news, Henri! Glad it's working. Perhaps you will consider setting up a seminar to teach your friends how to install and use Mint.

Thank you Chili555. Wireless is now working, including the light on the hardware switch!
The installation program places the wrong driver in the driver control panel, where it is tempting to activate. It seems to "block" the firmware install.
Thanks again.

Hello chili555

saw your solution for installing Wificard Broadcom. I have the same card .
I have to say that i tried a lot of command that i found on the Internet, so i think i dont'have a completely clean version of Linux Mint anymore

i tried the two commands ( sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source and sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree ) but already with the first command i get the following message:
rene@Linux ~ $ sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
Pakketlijsten worden ingelezen... Klaar
Boom van vereisten wordt opgebouwd
De status informatie wordt gelezen... Klaar

It is in dutch but i hope you see, that it is not going well installing

can you help me

Je zou dit kunnen zetten via Google translateas makkelijk als ik kon; nee?
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
madwifi-source: Requirements: module-assistant, but it will not be installed
E: There are requirements not met.
It seems that you have a problem with madwifi-source. You might try removing it unless you know you need it, and then try the bcmwl step again.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge madwifi-source
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

As one retiree to another, chili555, with what seems to be a common interest in getting our contemporaries to understand that there do exist alternatives to Microsoft and a hope that the retirement of Windows XP will provide an opportunity to puff them in the right direction, let me ask if the same procedure as for the Broadcom BCM4318. I should also be used for Broadcom NetXtreme57xx Gigabit Controller, i e, the wireless network card installed on Dell Latitude D630 machines. For various reasons, I haven't yet been able to complete an installation of Linux Mint 16 on this machine, which is currently running a 32-bit German version of Windows XP ; I have, however, checked and it looks as if I'll be able to install a 64-bit version of Mint on the computer, which sports an Intel Core 2 Duo mobile T7100 processor, so I don't know whether I'll encounter any problems when I finally do perform the installation. But I'd be most grateful for any advance hints you might be able to provide....

Many thanks for all your help !

It depends on the exact device. What does this tell us?

Code: Select all

lspci -nn | grep 0280
Here is a pretty good guide to all the Broadcom PCI devices: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214110

Can't say, as, as noted above, I've not yet installed Mint 16 on the machine (probably will be able to do that early next week or, at the latest, the following week - it all depends upon whether I shall have to use this computer as a demonstration object in a lecture on going from Windows XP to Mint that I'm holding for a group retirees on the 12th). Thus the information to which I presently have access is that provided by the Windows XP Device Manager, which, as noted above informs me that the device is a Broadcom NetXtreme57xx Gigabit Controller ; under »Details« I find that the Geräteinstanzkennung (Device Instance ID) is given as follows :
PCI\VEN_14E4&DEV_1673&SUBSYS_01F9210&REV_02\4&1E93A591&0&00E5
which doesn't correspond exactly to any of the pci.ids listed on your Ubuntu forums webpage. Have you any idea how to proceed from here ? Otherwise, I'll simply have to wait until after I've installed Mint 16 and then see what performing

Code: Select all

lspci -nn | grep 0280
tells me....

Again, many thanks !

Your Broadcom NetXtreme57xx Gigabit Controller is your ethernet device, not wireless. You might check again. The vendor and device information is exactly what we need.
Otherwise, I'll simply have to wait until after I've installed Mint 16 and then see
You wouldn't have to install; you could run the live DVD or USB and find out.

Sounds awesome!!! I wish I could be there!

Thanks, chili555 ; how careless of me to mistake the ethernet controller for the wireless one ! Four devices are listed under Netzwerkadapter (Network Adapeter) in the Device manager : 1394-Netzwerkadapter, Bluetooth Personal Area Network, Broadcom NetXtreme 57 xxx Gigabit Controller, and Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection. Inspecting the details for the latter, I find the Device ID to be the following :
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4222&SUBSYS_10218086&REV_02\4&AB208E&0&00E1
I then checked by running Mint 16 from the live thumb drive (really should have thought of that !) and after typing

Code: Select all

lspci -nn | grep 0280
in a terminal could confirm that my Network Controller was
Intel Corporation PRO/wireless 3945 ABG [Golan] Network Connection [8086;4222] (rev 02)
Am I justified in presuming that as this is not a Broadcom device, I'm not going to have any problems using it to connect wirelessly to the internet after installing Mint 16, or are there going to be new surprises in store for me ?...

I, too, wish you could be there on the 12th - my retirees would no doubt get a much more knowledgeable exposé of alternatives to a no-longer supported Windows XP, and I could sit on the sidelines and heckle, as is my wont. But alas, the audience will have to make do with my poor attempts to expound on the matter. It should be fun !...

Again, all the best !

Correct on both counts. In all recent versions of Mint, it works out of the box! I even have an ancient Thinkpad that has that exact device. During the install process, it will tell you that you have available networks and offer to connect in order to download updates. Supply the WPA2 password and you should be all set!
I could sit on the sidelines and heckle, as is my wont.
I'll wager we and the other retirees would have a great time! Have fun!
