Download 32-bit versions of packages from a 64-bit system?

Post by woodsman »

Hi all,

We are planning to provide customers with preinstalled Mint systems. Currently we are testing with a 64-bit LMDE MATE system. We will be supporting 32-bit as well. All downloaded cached non-stock packages are, understandably, 64-bit versions. Is there a way to download the 32-bit versions from a 64-bit system or do we have to install a full 32-bit system to download those versions?

(We want to store these packages locally to expedite installations rather than continually consume bandwidth.)

Thanks much. :)

Would you be building your own mirror?
Here you can find the mirrors for Mint
http://www.linuxmint.com/mirrors.php
The mentioned rsync command just lets you get everything, but you can tweak it if you want.
Add (Solved) to the topic-title of the first post when appropriate so others know they might find a solution here.

Oh no, we are not building our own mirror. :) We are downloading and storing only a handful of packages we want to use to round out the stock LMDE install. The customers will use the package managers to install anything further they want.

Eventually we will create a disk image to expedite installation rather than install from a DVD, perform updates, etc. Right now we have just the one 64-bit machine. Eventually we will build a 32-bit system, and then create a separate disk image of that too. But to save time we are hoping there is a way to download 32-bit versions from a 64-bit system.

Not a critical need, just trying to learn because we are new to Debian package management. :)

For the sake of a couple of extra pennies spent, why not give them their own DVD of the system then they can re-install if it goes pear shaped.

It was Microsoft who decided to be mean and not supply an actual disk, are you really going down their road as well?

They indeed will receive a DVD. For emergencies. These people do not have the technical savvy to reinstall --- that is why they hire us to install the software. :) If they clobber their system they will call us. We will be providing a copy of the Live DVD partly as a means to help them walk through emergency issues and partly to encourage trust. That is, giving them a copy of the DVD indicates the software really is free. :)

The point of having wanted to download the 32-bit packages from a 64-bit system is I have not yet built a 32-bit version. One way or another the 32-bit packages have to be downloaded at least once at our end. I can download them when I build the 32-bit version. I was just trying to save a little time and I thought the question was a nice technical curiousity.

Eventually, after a few installs and we become comfortable with the process, we will be using partition images to perform the initial installations at our end. The images will include our tweaks. Installing that way will be more efficient.
are you really going down their road as well?
I don't know where you got that idea. :) The question was about working efficiently at our end, not to create vendor lock in.

YES - you can.
But: there may be conflicts, - from the 64bit system.
- it may not allow you to download those 32bit files, as it will think that those 32bit files are for itself.

so, you may not save much time, as you have stated, that it is really 'only a technical question'.
in the long run, it would pay to download those files that are applicable to each system.
ie: build that 32bit system sooner, rather than later. ..
